GM Gen 3 vs Gen 4 LS Engines...What are the Differences?

Показать описание
LS engines are hot because of their availability, affordability, and compact size. That makes them ideal for engine swaps into seemingly anything (sorry Ford guys)!

But which LS engine are you looking at--Gen 3 or Gen 4?

If you're scouring a junkyard for a potential LS swap, there are some telltale signs to discern between a Gen. III and Gen. IV LS engine. Things like front timing cover, knock sensor location, cylinder head style (cathedral ports), AFM, and other components are key clues to which engine family you're looking at. In this video we cover some of the main visual differences between the two engines. Once you've determined if you've found an LS Gen 3 or LS Gen 4 engine, you can narrow the engine down by RPO code.

Good info on identifying the 2 engines. This will come in handy when purchasing a loose engine off Craigslist.

Thanks! Lots of great info! I’ve owned several Gen 3s, an ‘02 LS1 and currently an ‘05 LM7–love them!

LS4s always trip up even hardcore LS guys. They forget GM made a FWD LS. They came with an all-aluminum construction with cathedral 243 heads. I love mine, and it's a pretty capable platform if you ditch the dog poo 4t65e trans. Great video!

___ Thank you ___ I have a question if you or anyone with the knowledge could tell me please...
I have a 99 C5 convertible Vette. I'm going to be building a motor and I have the upp twin turbo kit that I am installing as well...
Would you build the original Gen 3 5.7 or a Gen 4 5.3? I plan on installing new pistons n rings as well as all nes bearings and a btr cam kit etc with ls7 lifters and trays .
Why would the 5.3 block be better? I heard they have a stronger block compared to the Gen 3 LS engines.
Thank you for any help. ✌️

Always great Tech from Summit Racing. But I'm planning to upgrade the LS3 in my 2017 Chevy SS (made in Australia) with either an upgraded LS style crate motor such as the 427/570 OR even go further and drop in an LT engine (wet sump) but it would help greatly if you would confirm which Çruise & Connect Chevrolet Performance package would fit and work in my SS. An LT5 with an 8 speed auto trans would be ideal but is that a viable option? If not, what package would you recommend that would be simply drop in and run? Thanks in advance. Cheers.

The '02 Escalade had a throttle by wire. I know this because that's what I pulled from one to install in my '70 Skylark.

The debate is SBF, SBC, LS or an LT in the 71 Pinto Halfhatch.

Not a LS guy. But looking at a Gen 4 5.3 for a drift build. Turbo it later .
