The new Hemi has a new Hemi, but is it any better than the old new Hemi? That's right, we're battling two iterations of the 5.7 III Hemi, the '03-08 vs. the '09-current, and we’re learning a TON in the process.

Hemi builder here.... throw some eagle heads on a pre eagle engine with a .40 thou head gasket and that same cam and you'll thank me later. Compression ratio jumps to 11 too!

I have a 2017 6.4 Crate motor with the stock intake on a Holley Terminator X computer - ported heads, upgraded cam, upgraded lifters + springs... put out 615HP @ 6700 and 553 Tq @ 4600. Folks, do not underestimate the stock intake! The torque curve is extremely linear with the short / long runner hybrid design.

Thanks for doing this comparison, it was super interesting, I thought it would be a lot closer than that! I remember when I got my Challenger R/T back in 09 I went to a car show with a friend who bought a 07 Charger R/T and he was complaining that his 5.7 felt kind of slow all I could remember thinking was "man what are you talking about this engine is a lot of fun!". This comparison just shows how many differences between the 2 engines there really are! Now having done a cam swap/headers and 3" exhaust to my eagle 5.7 I've got to say it's 10 times more fun than it was back then. Great engine, great comparison, thanks for the video!

When Steve Miller wrote his biggest hit song, “Fly Like an Eagle” He was thinking about the late-series third-gen Hemi.

True story.

The Eagle Headed Hemi is still underrated imo. It's the perfect swap if you want to improve an old 6-cylinder while keeping it in the Dodge family. 470-500hp is more than enough for a chassis of that age (might even need some additional bracing), and it will sound and look the part.

did he add in the cost and wait times for the EFI system to run it? also the best bang for the buck would be eagle head swap early hemi.

I feel like an even close to normal comparison would of been EFI 03-08 vs Efi Present motors with the same upgrades. As some people said, you can Swap the later EAgle heads on newer motors, one guy here said throw a 40 thou headgasket on and you can put the same cam in the earlier model with those new design heads. Obviously its not the most powerful, but in terms of a swap engine, its not the worst by any means. 400 bucks and you could honestly just put it how it is.

Yep throw on some eagle or 6.1 heads, flow is nearly identical, slight edge on the intake for the eagle and slight edge on the exhaust for the 6.1 heads and both raise the compression on the early motor with no VVT to worry about and the block and rotating difference are negligible. If your planning to stroke one really makes no difference besides the eagle version is now easier to get aftermarket parts for. I'm in the process of getting parts for a 396ci stroker pre eagle with ported 6.1 heads with claimed 370cfm on the intake side with compression in the 10.5 - 11.0 range with 237/251/113/+3.5 camshaft and a ported 6.1 intake.

I'm glad they did this test. For me I have an '05 Hemi in a '67 Dart post. Converting it over to carburetor was more expensive for me. I wanted the motor but I wanted it to look like a classic motor. That's why I converted over to carb. The difference is I bought a throttle body fuel injector with fuel rails so it's not really a carbureted engine. Obviously you lose a lot of horsepower going this route as proven by this video above. I have a small cam in it to make enough HP power for me to spin the wheels and sound the part. It's not a world beater but it's a ton of fun.

Next needs to be the shoot out between the 392 and the 5.7 hemi to see if its worth the extra bucks!

That modded early design looked like it had more juice at the low rps. So if you were daily driving it and not drag racing it, looked like a decent bang for buck.

Here's the hilarious thing, they basically dogged the early 03 to 08 Hemi for not making power, YET in their Hellcat Hemi Power episode their 03 to 08 Hemi made almost 500 horsepower naturally aspirated before they slapped the procharger on.

I really don't know how they screwed this test up when Richard Holdener already did this test that they basically re-ran on the same dyno.
