As wildfire evacuees crowded the roads out of Fort McMurray and travelled down the two highways out of town, the scene brought back memories of a scramble to leave the city in 2016, as an even more ferocious blaze consumed thousands of homes in the northern Alberta city.

Now with a wildfire burning nearby once again, the experience is bringing renewed calls for change — including more routes to escape. Morgan Black explains.

we need a huge circumference of perhaps gravel all around many towns in the country to act as a fire break, this seems to be the future

This happened in 2016 and those officials literally scrambled and ran for their lives last minute. Almost 10 years later, these officials have learned nothing and are still struggling to evacuate.

Two seasons of fires starting early right after the carbon tax. Not to mention right in the fossil fuel area.

Is wildfires an attack?? Think about concentrated heat waves or beams, like microwaves for example. They need to get a handle on this. I wish our government and all the different departments would focus on something like these strange phenomenons, they'd developed a technology/new weapon and we are oblivious to it.

UPC Jason Kenny decommissioned the rappel program, NDP Rachel Notley cut the fire fighting budget by 15 million. When will the government of Alberta train, organize and make a self sustained solution with forestry to identify and eliminate the fires before they become colossal in size?

So still only one route out, no improvements since the last fires.

If anyone dies in Fort McMurray is going to be his or her own fault. I was there when few years ago the same thing happened and all were forced to evacuate, and I have no clue why in the hell the people went back there to live again, while the place is a very well know fire attracting place. I helped last time and that was it. I am not going to help this people anymore due to their little brain.
