How does Fog Grass become the lifeline for desert ecology?
Показать описание
We are developing a unique forest in Ghotaru, Thar Desert, Rajasthan that harmonizes with the desert’s natural ecology. Among the species, Fog grass, which is nearing extinction due to its extensive use as fuel wood by the locals, is being nurtured alongside Neem and other desert-adapted plants like Bui and Sevad Grass, which serves as fodder and vital components of the regional grasslands. Drip irrigation has been installed to water these plants. This initiative aims to preserve and cultivate native species, ensuring the forest thrives while supporting the desert ecosystem.
Why Fog Grass is important for Desert Ecology?
Soil Stabilisation: Fog grass, a hardy perennial plant, plays a crucial role in desert ecology by helping stabilize sandy soils and prevent erosion.
Root System: Its extensive root system anchors the soil, improving moisture retention and promoting the growth of other native plants.
Habitat & Food Source: Fog grass also provides a habitat and food source for desert wildlife, supporting biodiversity in an otherwise challenging landscape.
Arid Resilience & Ecosystem Health: Its ability to survive in arid conditions makes it a key player in maintaining the delicate balance of desert ecosystems, contributing to their overall health and sustainability.
