How Far Did Germany Advance into the Soviet Union?

The German attack on the USSR commenced on 22 June 1941 and was named Operation Barbarossa. What was the farthest point the Germans got during their campaign against the Red Army? In the summer of 1942, Germany resumed the offensive with a massive attack to the south and southeast toward the city of Stalingrad and toward the oil fields of the Caucasus. In September 1942, the Germans reached the city of Elista in Kalmykia. It is said that one German patrol took off from there and managed to get near the Caspian Sea and spent the night of the 16/17th of September on the shoreline. They then safely returned to their own lines. This would mark the farthest point the Germans managed to reach into the USSR. Due to the German defeat at Stalingrad the Germans never got any further and had to retreat their troops from southern Russia.
