Has Discord Gone Too Far?

Whether it be free nitro trials or spamming you with ads, Discord wants you to spend money on Discord Nitro.

But my oh my gamers, Discord has released something that surpasses the apex of stupid, the apex of pointless, and the apex of shilling. A Discord nitro user badge. Show off to the world that you spend $10 a month on a chat platform. Show off to the world that you don't go outside.

This is a Discord badge goblin and a Discord mod's dream.

I think that as long as discord is only doing this with nitro/their own products we shouldn't really show any backlash. Because when they end up doing it with other companies or producs then the backlash will be so big they will never do it again. Plus advertising nitro is nowhere near as intrusive as getting a personalized ad on discord for headphones or whatever you just searched up on google.

I think one of the real big reasons they're adding the Nitro badge is to sort of compete with mods like FakeNitro by being a bonafide indicator, rather the shutting down the mod (which would make them hated).
Edit 2023.11.18: I'd also like to add that honestly, I'd personally prefer Discord takes my $10 a month and gives me some goodies than letting them collect and sell my data, and give me everything for "free".

You know, if you exceed the normal non nitro text length, it gives you a nitro icon to say you exceeded the normal length. It already does some of this stuff.

Discord is slowly turning into the next EA with their excessive microtransaction Nitro features that normal users can barely access.

I don't mind the Discord Nitro """ads""" at all. Really, they're just ways to show users who are either new to Discord, new to the concept of Nitro, or who think Nitro is still just "bigger uploads, custom emoji, GIF profile picture" what's new on the subscription service. Far, FAR better than the advertisement infested hellscape that was Skype back in the day.

The thing is it will always be uncool to pay for a free service that tries too hard. There's no badge or icon that won't make someone look like a massive nerd who needs several wedgies and a swirly. If Discord wants to make being a Nitro subscriber cool, they need to do a lot of groundwork to create something even mildly counter-culture like how Tumblr lets you stack checkmarks to meme on Twitter... Or legitimately do something cool with the money people are giving them.

You know, I've been a nitro user since 2018, for the one and only simple fact, I don't like ads, if I can support a service, and have them "not sell my data" while keeping it ad-free, I'll take it! And like you said at the end, it could be way worse.

As someone who has nitro and is on the fence about whether I should get it another year, things like these push me towards stopping. My initial reason for getting it was purely chat conveniences, so adding inconveniences to the system is a great talking point to put in the "don't renew" part of my internal value judgement.

I complained before about, when you go change your name or something like that in the user settings, you're bombarded with not 1, not 2, but 3 ads for discord nitro, for doing something as simple as change your bio or your display name, and there are more in the appearance tab

I don't know if they're getting desperate or if the higher ups still think "more ads = more people buy = more money = more good", and it sucks that there are alternatives out there that suck a lot, lot less, but can't use it due to discord's monopoly on VoIP

but they've definitely done so anyway. I've had ads and youtube videos pop up related to topics i've discussed on discord numerous times, for discussions that happened both in text and in voice
