For everyone’s reference, this encounter didn’t take place in bow range where the hunter felt comfortable enough to make the shot. It’s also important to note that this was filmed in the fall of 2021. By the fall of 2022, this buck made a full recovery and was hunted but it never came together.

We simply wanted to share an example of how crazy tough these animals are and gather opinions on what y’all think caused the injury.

Kind looks like some sort of fencing was wrapped around his neck lucky dude that he got it off. Amazing how tough and resilient these animals are

That buck deserved to pass by and have its chance to heal. I hope it went on to sire many future generations of tough ass bucks.

Looks like his neck got wrapped around in barb wire from a fence then he struggled for sometime to free himeself. Tough SOB.

Poor thing. After deer hunting I had a doe come across our field to get some corn and half of her neck was gone. Her shoulder was broken so I decided to put her out of her misery. Her wounds were so extensive. I couldn’t believe that she was even alive. there will to live is just incredible.

My first thought as a veterinarian was an electrical burn-how the skin was sloughing off but also healing underneath. Just didn't look like cuts/scraping like you'd see with wire/twine or punctures seen with antler wounds/coyote bites. Glad this buck was able to recover and be seen the next year. Tough is an understatement.

I believe somebody was caping him for a head mount and he had different ideas.

Seeing he had to jump through a bunch of hay netting to get to the field I’d say that we may have found the culprit.

There's a reason that there are bucks out there with the nick name "pin cushion" who were never recovered after bow season, but showed up again next year. Amazing animals they are. Seen a deer with no heart (slug blew it apart) run for 50+ yards before falling over dead in a creek.

I’m glad you guys let that one walk. He looks like he’s been through enough and deserves to live the rest of his life. 👍

His eyes are so innocent and otherworldly, like fighting for his life and enduring the pain has made him transcend to some living Buddha state.

Probably a fence great he fully recovered just shows these animals are really tough and can endure more than people think

Possibly an entanglement with thicker gauge wire fence - perhaps even barbed wire...

I have so much respect for deer. They are so resilient. I saw a video a while back of a nice sized buck that had the whole top portion of its back missing from its shoulder to its hind quarter and down to about a third of its left side. You could see it’s shoulder bone moving when it was walking. It was like someone had cut its tenderloin out. It didn’t act sick or weak. I couldn’t believe that it was still alive. The wound didn’t even look infected. I saw a doe with an arrow through its neck once and it didn’t seem to be bothering her at all.

I'm sure all the green crap hanging in the brush that he was tripping over didn't have "anything" to do with this right...

Seen one killed in Alabama that had a dead tracking collar embedded in his neck. Skin was completely separated.
