Years ago I did a mercy kill of a doe on Md Eastern Shore with a leg injury during blackpowder season. Had to remove remainder of leg in-order not to barf while dressing her due to smell from infected leg. She wasn't what I was hunting for that morning but needed to be put down.

That’s a mercy kill. He did that deer a favor. Coyotes would not have been so kind. He truly was withered.

If this guy's shooting is any indicator (gut shot at less than 20 yards), I'd say he hit it in the leg earlier in the season.
