Adam Savage's Replica Creature Head from The Thing!

Viewers have asked about this creature that hangs from the ceiling above the workshop, and Adam gives us a close look at this replica of one of his favorite monsters from John Carpenter's The Thing! In addition to being a terrifying presence in the cave, it has a delightful feature that Adam notices when watching it from the workshop's security cameras.

For some insane reason, this movie was shown in the middle of the day on regular TV back when I was 10 years old. I was home sick from school and watched it. The trauma is real.

"A lot of people have asked about this Thing hanging here..." I see what you did there.

I'm surprised Adam hasn't tried to create one using a cast of his own head.

When you said it never stops moving I shouted "Yes!" When it's included in sped-up montage footage it always creeps me out. It's like you let a shop spider hang out and now it's too large to deal with.

I love the smile Adam gets when he talks about the stuff he's passionate about

The incredible comic book artist Mike Ploog (who was hired as a production designer on the Thing) is the one who first conceived of the Norris head gag. All his designs are a big part of the look and feel of that film, and are definitely worth checking out.

Hey, I hope this gets to Adam . My dad Is the original artist behind this kit . It was commissioned by NEEDFUL THINGS back in the day . So the ones you find now are most often recast . The artist name is Robert Bagy ! You can look it up .but he isn’t the one that sales them on eBay .

Oh, you can't say it looks so amazingly creepy on security camera footage and then not show any of that!

One of my family friends was actually one of the prop makers on the film, and he worked on the stomach opening prop. I don't have any specifics about it or anything, I think it's just pretty awesome I know someone who worked on this incredible film!

The Thing was the first horror movie that I ever saw when I was six, that dog transformation is still burned in my mind to this day!

What Adam describes actually happened to me one time. First time I watched Galaxy Quest, when Tim Allen and Sirgourney Weaver's characters entered the room with the metal smashing stuff near the end of the movie, I literally exclaimed out loud "Screw that!", only to have Sirgourney Weaver say the same thing literally 1 second later. Everyone laughed.

So nice to hear someone else talk about a film I love soo much. A supremely cool show n' tell replica.

I've seen the thing more times than I can count, but your discretion of the chest seen paints quite a word picture. Kudos

I can see Ryan George describing this in a pitch meeting and the boss guy saying "severed heads with legs running on the floor are TIGHT"

Thanks Adam for this episode for so many reasons, among which highlighting which is also one of my all time favorite movies, the “you gotta be kidding me” moment in it and the head-moving-in-the-night story. This is by far one of my favorite shorts of the Tested channel.

The Thing is my favourite film. The shear level of creativity that went into making it is incredible. So many films fall by the wayside, usually because the SFX just don't hold up today. The Thing's practical effects look as good viewed on huge HD screens, as they did on the small CRT TVs we used to have.
