WOW! GAME CHANGER! I cannot tell you how often I have struggled with skin tones after I dodge and burn on the traditional gray layer in Soft Light. You are absolutely correct. Color do get over saturated easily. I often would put the blend mode to Luminosity in hopes that the color stay true or reduce the flow of the dodge tool. Your explanation and examples were fantastic. This is exactly what I needed. No one has even taught how Linear Light affects photos (except to sharpen in High Pass). Thank you for this. Anxious to try it out now.

Great tutorial, Blake! Yes Linear Light is a superior blend mode for this kind of work. For absolute colour-control I use the Luminosity blend mode on a Curves adjustment instead of a 50 % filled layer nowadays. Not only do I avoid any colour-shift that way but I also get a total control over local contrast with the Curve at the same time! On top of that the Curve adjustment protects the absolute blacks and whites from clipping in the histogram ( as long as the white and black points are untouched in the Curve tool ). This way I can fine-tune my curve to make sure my “Burning” is going to have less or more contrast, -and the same goes for the “Dodging” of course. Would you agree?

Those actions are fantastic. Dodging and burning this way gives a much more natural effect.

Excellent tutorial again since using this method I found by duplicating layers at different strengths in Linear light I can adjust specific areas for the best results

I am surprised. I will try it, and probably adopt this method from now on, because I have noticed the extra saturation that results of dodging and burning the traditional way. Thanks a lot!
