Quick Tip For Fast, Precise Dodge & Burn In Lightroom

For fast, precise dodging and burning in Lightroom, use an intersection of a luminance range mask with a brush. You can paint in the dodge or burn with broader brush strokes and let the luminance range mask limit the adjustment to precise tonal regions. It is very easy to do:

1. Add a luminance range mask and choose your target tone
2. Adjust the sliders (ex: increase exposure for a dodge)
3. Intersect the luminance range mask with a brush (the triple-dot menu in the masking area)
4. Brush over the areas to dodge or burn

That’s it!

The enhanced masking features in LR Classic keep my photo processing in LR instead of round-tripping out to an external tool. I stll need PS for focus stacking, composting, and other creative layering techniques, but 90+% of my photos don't require those tools. I would like to see LR Classic improve noise reduction as I do go to Topaz Photo AI often.

Why are the terms "dodging and burning" used rather than lighten and darken?
