Pixar Animation Studios, commonly known as Pixar is a computer animation studio owned by Disney. it began in 1979 as part of the Lucasfilm computer division, known as the Graphics Group before Disney purchased it in 2006.

Pixar has produced around 22 feature films, beginning with Toy Story (1995), which was the first-ever computer-animated feature film; its most recent film was Onward (2020). Toy Story 3 (2010), Finding Dory (2016), Incredibles 2 (2018), and Toy Story 4 (2019) are all among the 50 highest-grossing films of all time,

The studio has also produced dozens of short films.

so how Pixar as a studio was able to create all these amazing animation movies but most importantly what is the software behind the magic they are able to create.

Can confirm that Pixar would never have Presto (or Marionette, for that matter) out in the wild, been told directly from a Pixar dev that support would be a nightmare on a good day. For any students keen on interning at Pixar, they recommend that they cut their teeth on Maya, as (apparently) transitioning to Presto is easier if you have Maya experience. Other interesting tidbit, back before Autodesk pillaged the majority of the CG software ecosystem, when Maya was made by Alias|Wavefront, A|W made the Maya source code (which would have been somewhere around v2 back then, I think..?) available to Pixar so that they could write the prman-Maya bridge to be as seamless as possible.

The secret is they have the best artists, pipe td and production management team to control the cost and delivered the final product.
Tools matters but it's not the focal point of how they have accomplished their amazing work.
I find it's funny how people always comparing which software is the best, it really depends on what best suits your workflow and pipeline.

2:37 They did something like that for Monsters, Inc. too. They built a completely new engine just to animate Sully's fur, and they were rightfully proud of it. A set of test footages for different iterations of the algorithms they used is included in the Special Features of the DVD, it's awesome.

Blender has gained some real ground now. Allowing anyone to modify the source code and selling it for free really sets it apart

The thing with blender is you modify it's code unlike propitery software and this allows for wide range of optimizations

I can see they use Linux to run this in all the screenshots! I think that is really cool.

Alias-wavefront was the industry standard before pixar, it was doing incredible cg for its time, it used to run on silicon graphics hardware which cost 100s of thousands for hardware and thousands for software. Blender will get latest render an in December as both commercial and limited personal editions, and they are very much interested in using blender with renderman for smaller projects and just fun, as they are very much python based themselves in the way they are moving ahead.

00:48 Nope. Not most importantly. Even If they are given usual tools. They will still achieve their usual quality.. but yeah at the cost of more time.

I know the focus is on the software in your videos so this will be a nitpick. Lucasfilm started the division but you forgot to mention the part where it was bought by Steve Jobs and became the company that we know as Pixar before being purchased by Disney. It's a small detail but it kinda leaves people watching this video who don't know the history to think Lucasfilm developed all the technology. Love your videos BTW.

Something you missed here are the artists. Do you not think Pixar and Disney have gone to EXTREME lengths to get the best animation artists, the most talented, the most skilled and most experienced artists in the world? There is an old saying amongst artists. "An immature artist blames his tools". I personally look to that first Neanderthal who, sitting in his cave, decided to draw a mastadon on his cave wall in charcoal from his firepit. He didn't say, "If only I had a computer!" I think that the artists at Pixar would have done the job just as well, maybe not as fast, but definitely just as well with Maya.
