Setup OpenMediaVault 5.0 beta NAS on Raspberry Pi 4: RPi4 NAS + Configure RSync with x2 shares OMV5

Показать описание
In this video, we'll install openmediavault 5 (beta) on the new Raspberry Pi 4 Model B. We'll add an 8-bay Mediasonic USB 3.0 external enclosure and setup RSync to synchronize data between two of the drives to provide some data security should one of the drives fail. We'll also copy a ~1GB file to a share on the OMV Server and RSync it over to the backup drive. Openmediavault 5 beta does not support RAID over USB 3.0 due to reliability issues and given this software is beta, it's not recommended for productive use. That said, let's experiment with OMV 5 Beta.

I am new to everything (Linux, the Pi and NAS systems) but I have informed myself a bit about each one of the topics involved. However, I am a bit confused by your installation of Raspbian and then Openmediavault. I thought Openmediavault was itself an OS (a Debian-based Linux distribution), just like Raspbian. So, how are you installing an OS (Openmediavault) inside/on-top-of another OS (Raspbian)? In other tutorials I have seen for building a DIY-NAS, using the Raspberry Pi and Openmediavault, Raspbian is not installed since Openmediavault is itself an OS. What am I missing?

I had installed Raspbian from Noobs, so I entered the commands in the console by following the steps, but I cannot connect through the browser from the PC or smartphone, even with the 'localhost' command. :-(

Very nice instructions! Is there an advantage to downloading Raspbian and installing OMV over just downloading the OMV Pi installation image from their website?

I have got an HDD hub for 4 HDDs which connects by USB3. However, the new OMV does not recognize USBs anymore for setting up the RAID. Is there a way to still be able to do this with OMV? And yes I know USB is more unreliable and slower than SATA, but I'd still like to experiment with it.

Can you guide me on how to install plex on OMV 5 ? From what I know - I dont think there is a plex plugin. I hear plex can be installed using a docker container. But I know very little. A tutorial or link to a guide will greatly help me. Thanks and appreciate your effort on this video!!

Does smart data work on the box in omv? Do the drives go to sleep in this while running this 24/7. I have the proraid 4 bay version and cant get smart data or have the drives spin down.

Thanks for this! Any chance for running Docker + Plex in the future? Currently trying to get that set up on my system.

Install webmin, and then mdadm. You can then create a USB3 Raid that OMV can see. Worked for me with 2 x SSDs in a stripe.

Hello,
That USB 3.0 enclosure doesn’t have hardware RAID on it or the Pi just doesn’t see it as a RAID array?
If the USB 3.0 enclosure hardware RAID, can we connect it th the Pi via the USB 3.0 port and use it like that?
Thanks

Great video! Thanks for putting it together. Is it feasible to use the HP Mediasmart enclosure along with the RPi4? I have an EX475 Mediasmart that won't boot any longer. Its a shame to throw out the enclosure.

Thanks for this tutorial. The install went smoothly and my drives are mounted, but I did not wipe them because there is data already on them. I see them under file systems and they show online, but I am unable to create a shared folder. There is no drop down option to pick a drive. When I click the down arrow, nothing happens. What did I miss?
