An absolute cinematic masterpiece. I remember seeing it on British Television (it was Sky Movies) in the late 80’s and it was named Best Shot for the UK.
I loved it back then but when I revisited it in my early 40’s, it absolutely knocked me to the ground as one of the most epic sporting triumphs told in cinematic form and reflects so much of American Culture and values. And the performances of lead actors Gene Hackman and Barbara Hershey remain timeless as ever.
Therefore this movie being selected for preservation in the National Film Registry by the US Library of Congress upon being deemed “culturally, historically or aesthetically significant” is in no understanding terms a triumph in itself.

My favorite Sports movie and I am not a big BB fan. The characters, the story, just amazing work. Gene Hackman, Barbara Hershey, and Dennis Hopper .... all LEGENDS.

Honorable mention is Jerry Goldsmith. Absolutely MASTER of his craft. From this to Rambo and 100 other top films no one did musical scores better.
