PAISTE CYMBALS - Hi-Hat Comparison by Jan Pohl

Paiste artist Jan Pohl asked us if we could send him various 17“ Crashes so that he could pair his own individual Hi-Hats. We thought the idea was cool so he filmed the test with 12 different Hi-Hat pairings. Although with Steve Jordan being a massive influence, his favorite pairing came as a surprise.

Check it out and let us know your favorite combo in the comments.

15" hats are my standard :)
17" Traditionals sounded the best to my ears!

I mainly use 14" & 15" Hats but in this comparison all the combinations feat. the 17" Signature Traditionals sound amazing ❤🔥 The 17" Signature Traditionals is one of my favorite Crashes as well.

Great video, thanks! I personally like the 16" Signature fast crash as a top on a 16" RUDE crash/ride bottom

would have like to hear 2oo2 17" Sound Edge in that mix... I really like the SE feature ! have played various ones over the years...

For me 15" hi-hats are the ideal size. I have been playing 15" RUDE SE for decades now, as well as 15" Sig Power Hi-Hts. Those bigger ones in this video sound nice though, but they're not my cup of tea.

I Did this a few months ago with Various 16s.
16 Masters Dark top & 16 sound formula power crash Bottom.
And also with a Dark Enery Top.
They were pretty Damn Sweet.
Just so happen to own a 17 Masters Dark & 17 Dark Energy that I'm gonna have to Try out after watching this Vid.
Thanks 🎯

Combo 10 makes the cut for me in this 17" diameter comparison.
I frequently used a 16 Rude Crash-Ride as bottom and a 16 Twenty (Masters) crash on top. Works wonders.

The first pair, simply two 17” Trads.

What timing. I was just thinking about which crash combo to try for 16”.

I use 16" Masters Thin Crash over the 16" Dark Energy, too!

Very interesting. I’ve been digging on the masters dark for a long time, but I can’t afford them. Fortunately, I have a great set of big beats. I’m with you in that I also like combo 3!

For less hihat bleed in the snare mic, try a hypercardioid such as the Beyer M201. Or even miking the "shell" on the side instead of the top head.

Great shootout! Something I love doing with my 13" Paiste hats ;) (DE, dark crisp, and 505). Based on the recordings though, I actually thought the Masters / DE combination was the most washy/legato and least defined/crisp - which if you're going for a Steve Jordan sound, might just be what you're after :)

14 inch Rude Sound Edge and an 18 inch Rude crash/ride on top of my old 18 Alpha Rock China-Paiste makes the best cymbals I've ever played!!!
