Ric Flair vs George South (November 12th 1988 - NWA World Championship Wrestling)

Just a little gem that really ought to be on Youtube. This is why Ric Flair is one of the best, if not the best ever.

"You know who was actually the best worker back then, was George South .... I got in the ring with him one time and I said, 'Buddy, today you're Ricky Steamboat'. And we tore it down." - Ric Flair, WOOOO! Nation, December 9, 2015

"When you got to TV, you found out who would actually work, Ric was scheduled to work for the first time in awhile, but he really didn't want to. He had just gotten in from Pittsburgh after being up all night and he had to catch an early plane to Ohio after the taping. That studio was so cold and he didn't want to work and then have to shower and have that wet hair and rush to the airport."
"He and Dusty sort of got into it right there in front of everyone, and Dusty told him he was going to have to wrestle, so Ric threw his bag on a chair and said, 'Well then I want South.'"
"Ric started calling all these spots," and I was going a hundred miles an hour. I was having the time of my life, but I was rushing. I got so blowed up in there, I was really hurting."
"Back in those days, he called it in the ring. I didn't know anything. And I didn't know if we were going 2 minutes or 20 minutes. I was just going so fast. Ric did this every night, but I didn't!"
"Honestly, I think he was doing it just to tick Dusty off," George told me. He laughed as he thought back on it. "He was so annoyed with Dusty, I think he would have let me win the NWA belt just to get back at him."

Flair could make anyone look like a million dollars. George was one of the few he did not have to.

That SuperStation TBS bumper showing the upcoming events at 5 minutes after the hour brings back memories. Turner Time....gives you enough time to see there's nothing else on TV so you tune into TBS and don't miss the start of a show!

George was the most electrifying jobber in sports entertainment. 😛

Flair was always generous with selling for guys he didn’t have to sell for. Gotta give him props for that.

I remember watching this when it aired and was stunned South got in the offense he did. I thought they might be pushing him. Next week... squashed, just like always.

Came back to this match to remind myself that THIS is how you have a believable “on any given night” match with an underneath talent. NOT what happened on Dynamite last week

Thanks for posting. South is one of the few guys Flair said good things about.

There is a lot to be said about Flair, good and bad. But this helped George South so much.

Absolutely loved seeing lower tier guys in matches. This was my favorite era of wrestling. Also loved the interviews after the matches.

Heard George South’s name a million times on Cornette’s podcast. Good to put a face with him lol

That's the difference between an NWA Champion and the WWF Champion; the NWA Champion worked to make everyone look good in the ring. In the WWF, everyone worked to make the WWF Champion look good. This is why, no matter how big an arena or glitz, a large segment of the fans preferred Crockett to McMahon. We wanted simulated competition, not cartoon action figures.

I wish the dorks who complain AEW gives too much to lesser talent when they face a champion, would watch this match. This is part of the history of wrestling. There is psychology behind this.
