My favorite part has to be Gahnima regaining her memories, and seeing her mother guarding the gate to all her memories of her past lives. It fits so well and gives such a nice end to Chani's story

Saddest part about Alia is not quite that no one can help her, but that the only people who can help abandon her (Paul and Jessica)

Alia is the most tragic of characters in Dune
When an injustice is done to an innocent is most tragic
She was the ordered female who was bred to give birth to their planned and chosen KH.
Her mother underwent the spice agony with full knowledge of her pregnancy. Jessica's BG education at the level of RM not doubt included this abomination creation fact, given their abhorrence of abominations. Still Jessica underwent the RM spice agony which turned Alia preborn.

This is only the beginning of the tragic life of Alia.

I absolutly adore when Leto is talking to Stilgar and he said something in the lines of "How beautiful are this new generation, Stilgar?" triggering Stilgar in seeing that people are hydrated and using stillsuits more like a fashion decision than a real desert necessity.

I loved the sudden nature of Paul's death. I also liked how it kinda played the background. To me, it hit me like a DRAMATIC changing of the guard. For his people to mindlessly murder their once-great Messiah proves just what Herbert was trying to say about blindly worshipping a man and how fleeting and foolish it is for a populace. Because of what Leto becomes, Paul seems to have smaller significance in the larger story arch of the Atreides family and their overall dynamic of power. Paul was treated, somewhat, like a sacrificial lamb. He already had come to regret the man he had become and the events he spurred into motion in the previous novel and his death seemed like poetic justice to me because he was murdered, quite literally in the public square, by the very people who worshipped him.

I think I’m alone in this, but Paul walking off as a martyr at the end of Messiah felt more of a noble ending for Paul. I felt like he was more of a rambling old man in Children of Dune, brought back because the series was built around him. I would have preferred if the Preacher was a disciple of Paul’s from long ago

This entire series is honestly a masterpiece. I needed a book to read for school, and had seen the movie not to long before so I figured I'd try and read it. At first the language and the way of words had me stuck and it took me some time to begin to understand it, but once I did I was hooked. I've been reading these books non-stop since, and its amazing to find out how much enthusiasm is behind the community these books have created. I am extremely excited to read the last three, and being able to share my excitement with everyone over a book series has got to be one of the best feelings ever. The way the book causes introspective thought is probably my favorite part, and I think its easy to say that you can learn a lot about life from just reading this amazing story. So glad I still have new Dune material left to read, and I am already dreading the sadness I will feel once I finish the series.

I liked the way Frank handled Paul’s death in the temple perfectly from his speech of how the freeman abandoned their desert ways. He then gets killed by a priest (irony) after the woman identifies him. Paul’s character needed to quietly die in this book to focus on other characters. I personally think it was well executed.

Just finished this book a few days ago. One of the things I picked up was one of the genetic memories Alia was wrestling with is Agamemnon from "The Iliad". I was like what? Agamemnon is from the house of Atreus. The house of Atreus = Atreides. So technically "The Iliad" is a prequel novel to Dune. The house of Atreus was cursed by the gods.

I didn't find Duncan's sacrifice sad... It was a genious move to dishonour Stillgar to get him moving, and thus protecting Ghanima. Duncan is probably the best person in these books 😂

Favorite video to date (for obvious reasons) ;-)!

The conversation between... the Preacher and Leto is one of my favorite moments in the scifi/sci-fantasy genre.

Ghanima used self-hypnosis to convince herself of Leto's death.

I like how this book showed the troubles of forming a new government.

One correction: Harq al-Ada is Farad'n, not Leto.

I think his death got skimmed over for a couple of reasons. 1 everyone believes him dead and has accepted him dead at the beginning of the book and we get to see everyone’s way of dealing with him gone kinda. Then we get more time with him as the preacher and when he meets Leto we really get to see the end of his character arc. So we’ve already got all this time with him before his actual death for us the reader to say goodbye to him that by the time he dies it would feel a little redundant to go through the post death stuff all again. And by that point I think Frank wants us to feel like the Dune saga is past Paul and it’s Leto’s now.

The Children of Dune miniseries, which does an excellent job combining both Messiah and Children as they are basically one story, is great and gives more weight to Paul's death. A shoestring budget, but what they were able to accomplish is pretty damn remarkable. It manages to give a summation of what happens in God-Emperor, more or less, in a few paragraphs. The soundtrack is also out of this world.

One thing I've learned from the series is never count someone as dead until you've seen the body and even then you might get surprised

Just finished the book, this is exactly what I needed - a nice little breakdown of the plot, unpacking the important bits etc. Helps me rearrange my thoughts on the book. I almost feel the desire to reread it before moving on to God emperor.

I did my Dune reread last Autumn. That whole first Dune tetralogy has so much substance, so much philosophical stuff in there. Can't wait to hear your thoughts on God Emperor when all of that is turned up to 11.

I think Alia’s arc is the worst in the series. They set her up to be a powerhouse behind Paul (Alia of the Knife, Saint Alia, etc) but in the end she just seemed weak, I didn’t even read it as her fighting back, I read it as her getting overwhelmed and basically falling off the balcony. Guess I’m just salty at the lost potential of her character.
