To get pole/track length... times the window width by 1.3. This will give you 15% extra each side of the window (a guidance) to accommodate the curtains when open to help maximise the light that’s able to come in. If that space is available either side of the window of course! If you are lacking space then a wave style curtain will have the smallest stack/gather when the curtains are open. This is a contemporary style header and you’ll need to make sure that this will suit your taste/home.

I prefer steaming curtains in situ over ironing prior to hanging. Delicate fabrics, for example suede/velvet, may require steaming from behind the curtain instead of the front to prevent marking or damaging the fabric. Some steamer attachments can keep the steaming plate from being in touch with the material
if needs be when steaming from the front. Thin fabrics that don’t respond well to steaming may require ironing.

Create neat folds down the drop of the curtains by following the pleats/folds down from the header (top). Now tie these up with ribbon (in two places for average sized windows and 3 for longer drop curtains) to keep them in place for 48hrs. Do not tighten the ribbon too tight as the folds need to remain rounded and curvaceous as opposed to having angular folds. During this 48hrs the fabric will be trained to keep these folds therefore helping to keep nice even pleats when the curtains are either open or closed, much like you may see in many professional images.
