I"ve work for the post office for the last 4 years, in the last 2 I've had my wheel fall off twice of the LLV (Mail Truck). You do notice it it sounds like grinding metal before a thump. Outside sharp turns the wheel will stay on with nothing more then centrifugal force until you stop.

There was small convoy of farm tractors driving down the road here a while back. One of the big wheels on the back of the last one came off, but the driver did not even slow. They were going downhill though, so the wheel quickly overtook him and the two tractors in front.
The doubles take were hilarious. Wish I’d filmed it

My friend suffered from loose wheel nuts, it wasn’t a Bentley it was an Austin 7. Going down hill his rear offside wheel overtook him. This was in 1964, and he still gets his leg pulled about it. Seriously, over tightening is just as bad as under tightening, as he learned that day!

Thanks to the weight of a car you really do notice a noise way before the wheel comes off. Bought a car once where one wheel started coming off on the trip back, pulled over and tightened it like nothing.

Makes you wonder what the guy was doing to it before I arrived though.

Many years ago trundling along in my 1936 Austin 10 l felt a very slight lurch and watched as one of the wheels rolled merrily ahead of me. Slightly disconcerting. Another time the gear stick came off in my hand...oh the joys of motoring!
