Cora is pregnant and everyone hopes it will a boy this time. That's why (Matthew's) "whole future is at risk". Will he inherit the earldom and entailed lands (and wealth) ? Or will the earldom pass to Cora's new baby son?

Mary's honest about not loving Matthew enough to marry him as a middle class solicitor. She has been brought up to marry for wealth and a title, as the eldest daughter of an Earl. If she marries Matthew now, her future is up in the air.

"Mary can always change her mind" meaning she can get engaged to Matthew, set the date for after the baby's birth, but call the wedding off with no harm done. That is the Dowager Countess's plan. But Mary "can't do that to Matthew" as in string him on and then jilt him once a son is born.

As it happens, the baby was a boy but Cora miscarries after her maid ensures she slips in the bath (long story).

Matthew, still the heir presumptive, is injured in the Great War. He then gets engaged to an heiress Lavinia who has looked after him. She dies, and he ends up marrying Lady Mary and they have a son.

Mary will never be a Countess but she is the mother of the future Earl. Her remaining at Downton Abbey and financial position are assured.

Edit: I thought he had married Lavinia. I saw clips from Downton Abbey long ago.

There is nothing grotesque about Downton Abbey. It's fiction, and not intended as history.

With so many wrong steps why in the world did O'Brien not get canned or put in jail?? And yes I know it's fiction. How Cora could not see the reality of Mary's treatment of Edith and Edith resentment and backlash, astounds me. Was she just hoping things would become right if she ignored it?

I know I missed something here, but it's very funny to hear Mary say she's going to help her own maid unpack.

This is one of those times i dont quite like the dowager. Take him and then turn him down if he loses the money no no. Not good. But pragmatic i suppose. The dowager is contrarion sometimes soft snd sweet and sometimes like in this time rather cold. I love her tho, all the same

Downton Abbey is an insult to both history and class. The series grotesquely romanticises the servants, portraying them as societal revolutionaries who defy the rigid class system and miraculously ascend the social ladder, while simultaneously reducing the aristocracy to a parade of moral degenerates and inept buffoons. This deliberate inversion of historical reality reeks of pandering to modern egalitarian fantasies.

The truth is that the aristocracy, for all its faults, upheld centuries of tradition, culture, and governance, while loyal servants maintained the dignity of their roles with pride and decorum. By painting the gentry as clueless and the staff as visionary heroes, Downton Abbey spits on the legacy of those who shaped civilisation. It’s not historical drama—it’s historical vandalism dressed in period costume.

If you want fairy tales, watch Disney. At least they admit it’s fiction.
