How the Republic Won the Battle of Coruscant | Star Wars Battle Breakdown

On today's Star Wars Legends Episode of Battle Breakdown, we take a closer look at the Battle of Coruscant, as featured in Revenge of the Sith and the Clone Wars.

The Battle of Coruscant saw the Republic defend Coruscant from the CIS, the fleet destroyed the Invisible Hand, while Anakin and Obi Wan rescued rescued Palpatine.

The battle of Coruscant was definitely a masterstroke by Palps. There was no way it could have happened without him (he gave the CIS the hyperspace routes), and there was no way the CIS could have known about the secret fleets, thus ensuring a Republic (aka. future empire) victory.

Now, not only are the citizens of the capital terrified, they will turn to their brave leader, who was cool under pressure, and who's forethought saved their government and lives.

To be fair, Palpatine was prepared for every possibility, whether Republic or the CIS won. If Grievous had followed up the devastating victory at Duro with a knockout blow, Palps would sue for peace, with him somehow maintaining all his power. He truly was the master of 4D Chess.

I love the use of distinct colors for each faction's fleet. Beyond the aesthetic quality, it really clarifies the overall scope of the battle, the comparative size of the fleets involved, and makes it easier to distinguish each faction's fleet from the others, especially in battles where there's more than two factions involved - the Battle of Bilbringi, perhaps? ;)

Imperators and Victory IIs - damn that would have been a sight to see if they were portrayed in Revenge of the Sith. But given the Venators were introduced and the Clone Wars series hadnt started yet it would have been also confusing. Still - would have been good to see them mingled in that massive battle.

The broadside scene with the Venator and Grievous's flagship was absolutely amazing. Honestly wish they'd done more of that in the movies or shows

СIS were designed to lose.... and they still put up much better fight (and war), than Empire and First Order. CIS didnt have big advantages over Republic (except for numbers), but CIS was only defeated because of Anakin killing all the leadership. They had many losses, but just as many victories. Empire and First Order had a giant advantage over rebels - and they lost almost every battle in movies, like complete morons.

I really think that without Palpatines games the CIS would have won here. It is obvious that the secret Fleet was nearby because of Palpatine ordering so. But I think even with them the CIS still had the upper hand. Only after the entering of the open-circle fleets and Obi-Wan and Anakin the Republic had a clear winning chance. I also think that the Republic troops got a moral boost that helped them win, when they heard that the two most famous Jedi were now in battle.
