Setting Up a Self-Sustaining Brine Shrimp Biosphere

I've always been intrigued by self-contained ecosystems in jars/bottles/etc. I wanted to try and throw something together that I could keep on my workbench in the background, and easily view at a quick glance. Brine shrimp seemed like a decent choice for this. I remember being fascinated by the carbon cycle, life cycle, etc, in school. I guess this is my attempt at experimenting with those in my controlled settings.

(08/23/23) And yes, I do now realize @theCodyReeder did something very similar to this years ago and somehow I missed that video before making and posting this one, Otherwise I would have given him credit for the idea. The best I can do is put a shout out in the description and acknowledge his contribution in a later channel update video.

@3:57 - The store-bought Epsom is usually a penta-hydrate. One can transform that to nearly anhydrous with a trip in the oven. Ramp the temp slowly or watch a how to to get it right. Edit: you beat me to it.

@0:59 - That is one bad-ass bench top. Very nice HF magnet too. Those sumbitches are STRONG.

@9:33 - Is that an ozone generator I see in shot? I used to sterilize an unused bathroom with ozone before inoculating my mushroom jars. I left the jars and all of the equipment in the empty room and blasted it with ozone. Let it vent for 30 minutes and it was good.

Brother, if you're not from Pa, then you're certainly in a border state. One - the Amish. Two, the inflection in the voice. FWIW, I buy all my meat and produce from Amish vendors in Mt Joy and Lancaster county.
