Sahra Nguyen, Founder of Nguyen Coffee Supply, shows us how to use a phin filter to make a delicious cup of Vietnamese iced coffee. A phin filter is a traditional Vietnamese brew tool also known as a phin drip, Vietnamese coffee maker, Vietnamese coffee press. Learn more about Vietnam’s beloved coffee brew tool that’s eco-friendly, portable, and no-paper waste! In this video, we're using Vietnamese coffee beans roasted in Brooklyn, NY.

Step by step tutorial:

Place phin filter plate & brew chamber on top of glass

Add Vietnamese coffee (2 tablespoons or 14 grams per serving if using a small phin)

Shake to even out coffee and drop gravity press on top of coffee

Add 1 oz of hot water
(about 1/2 inch of water above the press)

Let bloom for 45 seconds

Add water to top of filter

Cover with cap to keep brew hot

First drip should drop before 2 minutes

When done, cap becomes coaster for the brew chamber

Do a second pour of hot water for less strong coffee

Last drop should finish around 5 min

Enjoy it black, over ice, or mix it with milk and sweeteners according to your preference

Add condensed milk for a traditional Vietnamese coffee.

There's not wrong way to enjoy your Vietnamese coffee. Cheers!!

Thank you for the video guide! Just bought a phin and some Vietnamese robusta beans. Coffee is delicious, just like at a Vietnamese restaurant. It is also amazing that a phin is portable, easy to clean and works without a paper filter!

Your video is one of the videos that made me want to try the Phin, so about 2 weeks ago I bought the Nyugen model. I only like coffee black, so I tried a Phin black, oh my, the taste surprised me, it's better than my Hario V60 Switch! It probably matches my Bialetti Brikka Moka pot and my Turkish coffee in strength, but each has a different taste profile, but the Phin makes very tasty coffee. I haven't bought a bag of Vietnamese coffee yet, I need to go to several of my local international markets and see if they have it first before I buy it online; but even just using local store bought black espresso roast coffee it came out superbly.

These Phin makers are cheap to buy, I went with the Nyugen because supposedly it is the original makers of Phin makers, not sure if that's true, but it does work great. Easy to make coffee with, and easy to clean too.

Thanks for turning me onto the Phin, and for doing the video, it was very well done and informative.

Super useful! I found this set in the back of a cupboard (from an old housemate probably) and after some research to find out what it was I was still confused on how to use it. So this was pretty useful. I do seem to be missing the top cover thing though.

I have the opposite problem! My dripping is too fast, and the coffee becomes watery.

If you forget to let the ground bloom, how does that affect taste?
