Microsoft has recently announced Power BI is now becoming generally available (GA). It’s a great time to start exploring some of the advanced functionality Power BI offers. In this session Adam Cogan will quickly bring you up-to-speed with Power BI, then get straight into the cool stuff. You’ll feel the fire of the Power BI Desktop App, connecting to data sources, building a data model and publishing the end result to PowerBI.com.

Adam will also talk about what your organization should be doing now… how to create custom content packs, the developer options and how to extend Power BI beyond what ships in the box.

With the recent acquisition of Datazen by Microsoft a new product comes into the mix, Adam will take you through the features and how it fits into the BI roadmap.

At 1:03:12 you are incorrect. You can refresh the data on demand. You click the refresh button whilst in the desktop application and then click publish. It does take a few minutes but it can be done.

Great presentation! Some of your suggestions have been put in place: Embed code in websites, reporting services tiles. I think you are right about your predictions. Seems like they are piling in huge updates to Power BI and merging SSRS in as well. I think you comments on version control is on point. We really need to be able to sync our files from web to desktop and have dev vs production control.

That was a great presentation and a good intro to Power BI. It does highlight something to me that a *lot* of BI tools miss though: presenting a nice layer to the end user where they don't have to know anything about the underlying data and its relationships to query, especially ad-hoc stuff. This is where Business Objects has always had it all over the competition, IMHO. That universe layer is the single best thing about that product and the fact that you can go from question to data to analysis very quickly. I wish that Tableau, PowerBI and other products allowed a developer or DBA to build something like this for the end users. If I were putting Power BI for database querying out there for my end users now, I would be building a set of denormalised or Kimball style star-schema views that they could hit and not have to worry about all that detail underneath.

Interesting talk - thanks must also go to youtube for adding the ability to speed up videos.
The duck typing needs to be fixed, I am guessing that the system has been designed in the manner to provide speed over accuracy.

I still think Power BI is well behind when compared to Qlikview I'm afraid, I just think the big issue is around security and version control release still very vague

Adam can keep his idiotic comments about the Australia freedom ban to himself.
