I’m 54. I DJ’d in my 20s on vinyl (house/tech house) and after a 25 year break, I just picked up a DDJ FLX4 for fun, and I’ve really gotten back into mixing.

Things have obviously changed a lot since I hung up my Technics 1210s. My ‘Rekordbox’ used to be an actual box with records in it, for example.

So, I decided to watch this content to re-orientate myself as well as better understand my new hardware and software. I found it incredibly useful. Some of it helped remind me that I am doing things correctly, and other parts of it were definitely new to me. Basically, it helped re-acclimate me and taught me something new as well.

Not only did this content further encourage me to get back into mixing, but it’s also encouraged me to look at some of your other courses (probably Rekordbox and DDJ FLX4 intermediate).

It’s well-structured and laid out, and shot perfectly for the learning experience. Nice job and thank you for sharing this excellent free content 🙏 🎧

From experience (nightly for one year in bangkok at one point), the key is to pay attention to the energy levels of tracks. In smaller venues/bars, the energy will come from the highs and the mids due to the sound system not having pronounced bass. You can kill a mix in this sort of situation by mixing in a heavy bass track with sparse highs. It might sound great in the heddys, but sucks in the venue.

Strangely, what got me into it (although I've always wanted to do it) was actually making a mix for my burlesque performance and, having been an audiophile my whole life, I just didn't like the fading from one track to another, knowing I could make it better, but I needed the equipment to do so.
