The community in which Jesus lived, and the environment leading up to the First Jewish Roman War was a fragmented one. We may be aware of names like Pharisee or Sadducees, but there was another group that Jesus interacted with: the Samaritans. But what is a Samaritan? Who were the Samaritans? How do they fit into the puzzle of the near east in the First Century? This video gets into their history! Some of it may surprise you!

An extensive exploration of the New Testament by one of the most renowned scholars in the field.

The Five Gospels - Robert W. Funk,
This book’s introduction remains one of the best and most accessible introductions into New Testament scholarship. It does get a bit into jargon, but I still find it to be one of the better explorations of the subject.

This is part of a series of videos that provide an insight into the context of the early New Testament. What other questions does it raise for you?

Good video! I'm not a Christian but a Jew who practices what would he called Samaritanism. I would like to say the the community is growing. In the early 1900s, there was only about 100 but these days there's 800+! This could be thanked to a large part of accepting conversions and cooperation with local Jewish leaders. :).

Nice work again, John. I was unaware that there is still a population of Samaritans today and that they continue to worship on a mountain. Interesting!

Thank you John, this history lesson puts the story of the good Samaritan in an even stronger light in which the message is given. I am so glad the Lord has directed me to this channel. It has given me new insights into my Bible study. May the Lord bless you for your efforts and the Glory is all God's...Wilmer

I cannot find where Samaritans said Mt Gerizim is where the temple stood. What I've found is that they feel it's just where it should stand. They feel David chose the wrong spot and Solomon followed what David had chosen. They only use the first five books and so any traditions practiced by returning people were foreign to them.

I was in school in Jerusalem for two years, finding that for Passover, the Samaritans do numerous bloody sacrifices of lambs on Mount Gerizim.

There are (2) groups of Samaritans that living today. One group that live in Holon (South of Tel Aviv) that speak Hebrew and there are the one that lives in or near Mount Gerizim / Jabal Jirzim, Nablus - Shechem (North of Tel Aviv) that speaks Arabic/Aramaic. My father family is a Samaritan from Nablus-Shechem area.

You did not talk about the Roman Empire (Eastern Roman Emperor Zeno) and the Sarmatian Revolt war.

Thank you, now i kinda get the idea why Jesus when he first send out His disciples not to go to Samaritan but to the lost house of the Jews first, I think Jesus don’t want any confrontation.

Jesus uses those that were held in low esteem..( the base sorts..as it were..).to teach those self righteous rulers of Israel...that God, s not limited to religious gurus to accomplish His will...among ordinary people..w/ ordinary people...& even people are not accepted as the..." norm..." those Samaritans that the Jews hated...end up as the hero of the parable...being spoken to the self righteous Jews..
