The worst part of learning English in foreign countries is that they focus only on written grammar, which is very easy compared to many languages, but they never teach pronunciation, which is harder than most of the languages in the world because it is not phonetic at all.

Brilliant! Thank you, Rachel. I've been studying English my whole life, but only recently started using schwa sounds in all the right places - with reductions and connections. Your videos are helping me bring my General American to a whole new level; invaluable for a working actor stateside.

As an unstressed word, I was able to make a close sound by pressing it behind the teeth, where they come together, rather than bringing it through. This is what native speakers will do to save time on unstressed syllables. Just make sure you tongue isn't lifted to the roof of the mouth (like a T/D) or pointing the tip down (like an S/Z).

Jesus I should have known your channel 15 years ago Rachel. I studied a lot with english teachers that were not native and now I see myself trying to fix what I've learnt all the time.

Thank you for the great videos and your hard work!

Rachel, thank you so much for teaching this lesson. I'm always that close to biting my tongue when I say "to the" in my usual old way. This lesson is extremely helpful in fixing my problem! thanks

I simply love these kind of pronunciation tips, it seems simple and taken for granted by native speakers but it´s of great value for us (learners).
Thanks a lot.

Well I'm sure I'm not the first person saying that, but you would be (if you aren't already) a fantastic coach for actors, newscasters and anyone who works with the spoken language. I have long ago chosen American-English to be my accent of choice (I am a native German living and working in Portugal - so my accent is long since blurred after 28 years). I went for US-English because I am much more exposed to it for an array of reasons - and I simply love it. It flows easily. I have spent the last two decades beating the heck out of my German accent - even reading text out aloud trying to switch at will between Standard American and "Posh UK" accent (I am not that good at the latter). I can hear the drifting in and out when I talk in US-English. I need to constantly clean every nook and cranny. You are such a great help. It helps that I am a musician (so at least I have the ear). Thanks for your very detailed lessons - they are of great help!
