How To Pronounce February: Two Different Pronunciations

preview_player
Показать описание
There are two ways to easily pronounce “February”
👉With both R’s: FEB-ru-(w)eh-ree
👉 Replace R with Y: FEB-yu-(w)eh-ree
🇺🇸 This pronunciation is more common in American English

Wondering about the /w/ in the phonetic transcriptions?

The W is an intrusive consonant that occurs when you shift from a high back vowel (tense /u/) to a front vowel (eh). Focusing of making the /w/ sound will help you with the pronunciation of the tense /u/ vowel, and will help you sound clearer, especially if English is not your first language!

Most native English speakers just use (and expect) the second/easy one. Don’t worry about pronunciation too much, we’ll understand what you’re trying to say :)

I pronounce it as “Feb-ru-ary” — I’ll work on adding the “wary” to see how that fits. February is one the words that I can really hear my lazy tongue. Thanks for this video!

I don't know whether it counts as a different pronunciation, but a lot of people put the stress on syllables 1 and 4 instead of 1 and 3. This can sound (or actually get contracted to) "febry"

Can you make the same tutorial about May?

It's written as "Februari" in Indonesia. When I was young until I was like 8 y.o, I always wrote it as "Febuari" because that was how I pronounced it. 🤣
It's my birth month so I wrote it quite often.
Now I pronounced it as the first pronunciation. Pretty close on how it's pronounced in Indonesia, unless in Indonesia the "R" has the sound of more defined trill in it.

In my head I always say Feb-ru-ary makes it easier to spell, but I drop the r when actually saying it.

One of my native languages uses a lot of letters like r, c and z close to each other, so very often i don't even realize that a word was supposed to be difficult because im so used to weird sounds and letter combinations lol. for example, try pronouncing sz. Its kind of like a letter, but not really? We have so many. It actually sounds like shushing someone, so not that difficult but still pretty funny.
