Daan character history & lore in Fear & Hunger 2: Termina.

Daan the Doctor is possibly the most tragic character in Fear and Hunger 2: Termina. Having lost his parents at a young age due to a Sylvian cult ritual gone wrong, Daan was taken in by a Baron who gave him a better life in exchange for his knowledge on the Old God. Daan marries the Baron's daughter, Elise, before going off to be a medic in the Bremen war. He saw horrors, and after the letters stopped arriving from home, he returned home to find the Baron and Elise had been killed in a dark ritual to the mysterious Sulfur God. He sacrificed his eye in an attempt to revive them, but it was to no avail. He then set off the Prehevil to find answers, but found none. In his B ending, we see he found no peace and the offer of Pocketcat grows ever sweeter to Daan.

One thing that actually lots of people miss (here I blame yt monetization). Daan was sexually abused as a child. I mean it was a Sylvian cult of all things and his parents did force him to participate (there is a mention of this in his backstory) and he knows how to use sylvian magic. Yes he did rebel against it because of the fact that he didnt lost himself to it. My headcannon is that when Daan shown signs of unwillingness and opposition to it, it became too much of a bother for his parents to care about it, because they were too busy with sylvian, getting more and more entranced as years went by.

The part of Daan that sticks out to me the most besides the fact he doesn't know which name is his true name (Daan or Daniel) is that Elise was sacrificed into pieces...

So Daan stitched her body back together and gave as much of himself as he could to try and revive her. This resulted in him becoming very pale and missing his left eye.

He tried so hard, he was happy and it was taken away by Needles.

Can you imagine how awesome and terrifying it would be to see Daan transformed into pocket cat in a future FaH3? 💀

I've seen a theory that the reason Daan's parents disappeared is Because they forced him to participate and tried to pass Sylvian's "gifts" to him as a child. In F&H 1, as twisted as Sylvian is as a love/lust/fertility God, there's always a requirement for some level of consent for participants in physical worship of Sylvian. Whether it be in the Bunnymask field or in a Marriage.
And especially there was always a hard stop on anything to do with children in Sylvian's affinity. Nothing can be done with the Demon Kid or the Girl. And trying to force past a refusal to do anything with the baby demon gets you instantly smote because the gods are so disgusted by you.
Maybe in trying to make Daan to participate, his parents angered Sylvian so much that they were punished for it with a ritual gone wrong or however else Sylvian wouldve done them in.

It’s worth noting that a Sylvian ritual goes wrong when there’s a lack of consent(Father Hugo’s unused sprite suggests that, regrettably, children can participate in marriage, either when killed and raised as ghouls, or when groomed to ‘consent’ in a way that Sylvian ultimately lets it slide), and learning magic requires the deed be done

So Daan was SR’d by either his parents, the cult his parents were in and groomed him into, or SR’d by the cult and his parents. And it was only when he began defying the cult that his parents(and maybe cult) got their comeuppance when they then tried forcing him to participate in a ritual, causing the offenders to be killed

Then, for Daan to educate the Baron of Sylvian, he would also have to do the deed to teach him the magics, and it’s not too off the table to think Elise would also be involved in these teachings

I'm pretty sure Daan is the only character that got a bad ending B, the closest second is Levi but at least he can still try to heal while Daan hopeless is absolute and the corruption of pocketcat is a certain thing

Daan's blank soul suggests to me a predisposition towards lacking self agency and being strung along and made a toy by the whims and machinations of others. He's tormented by the Old Gods all his life and serving them in some form seems to he his inevitable fate. But maybe in the most ideal scenario, he finds himself strung along by someone with better intentions. Someone who challenges him and brings out his deeply buried drive. Someone perhaps with an endless soul to compliment and fill his blank one.

Daan was forced to live on the streets, but was not built for them, like pickpocketing and stealing. That part struck with me the most. Really is endless/ blank soul hand in life.

Yea, I think no matter what the canon storyline will be (fear and hunger 3), he will probably end up being Pocketcat or something.

Now that I'm rewatching Fullmetal Alchemist, I can't help but notice some similarities between Daan and Edward Elric, mainly how they sacrificed body parts trying to bring back the dead.
