Caterpillar RD-4 Engine Removal Fail

preview_player
Показать описание
1st attempt at removing the engine out of a 1936 Caterpillar RD-4 to continue the disassembly for restoration. Typically the engine can be lifted and the main spring can be removed but with everything being stuck on this crawler from sitting for 50 years, the tracks and track frames are rotating with the engine/trans therefore making the spring removal impossible. Stick around to see the complete teardown and restoration and thanks for watching!

A setback that I know you will overcome. It amazes me how calm you are about these things. I can tell you are planning your next move ahead.

Squatch sent me. I am subscribed. I was going to comment in the previous videos that you were have great success with disassemble for a machine that had sat for some 50 years plus. I see now that would have been a premature comment!! I am binge watching the D4 videos. Thanks for posting. I have a feeling things are going to get real interesting. Glad to hear your going to repaint the machine (NONE of that patina nonsense.)Does the machine have a nickname.

It looks like the shifter is hitting the neutral lockout because the clutch is engaged and rust frozen. I'd try breaking the tracks to free up the rails, but looking at the finals should be interesting anyway.

I couldn’t tell from the video - did you end up taking off the big nuts that hold the spring to the bottom of the engine? You might be able to try taking those off and whacking the spring down to at least get it free from the spring to get the engine out. If you tried this obviously ignore me I just couldn’t tell if you took them off. Always fun dealing with things that are stuck. Keep the videos coming were here for the journey now.

Hopefully it’s the brake bands stuck preventing the sprockets from turning in turn lifting on the tracks and not the point where the track frame pivots. If so pulling the steering clutch/brake assembly might do the trick. Good luck!

Should be a interesting challenge. I'll be here.
By the way are you going to the LeSeuer Pioneer Power swap meet at the end of April ? I intend to camp there Thursday, and Friday night.

Hummmmnn
I don't know if it will help but jack the back up and put blocks under the track on both sides at the rear!!!
6 inch if you can!!! That should help you be able to lift the engine enough to get the spring out !!!!😊👍👍👍👍🌎🌞

So is this a case of "if you can't take the engine off the Cat, take the Cat off the engine"?

From your lifting plates and storage bins you made, I'm guessing you're a metal fabricator.?
