This great battle between Li Dayin and Tian Tao should remind people just how difficult it is to become #1 in China in sport. There are 1.4 billion people in China, in all of Europe less than a billion, same with all of the Americas. China has a strong economy, a strong centralized government and determination to earn golds. So if you have ability in a sport especially one like weightlifting which has easily identified parameters of greatness someone is going to notice and you will receive the coaching and training you need to go as far as you’re able to if you’re willing to make the effort. If you become an elite athlete your life will get better with material things. The point I want to make is with the vast population it can seem easier to win the Europeans than the Chinese Nationals. These guys have stiffer competition than any other nation. Maybe the old Soviet Union was similar when you look at all the great athletes now from Russia, Armenia, Georgia, Moldova, Belorussia and all the central Asian countries (all the “Stan’s”).
