I looked it up, average size of a grain of fine sand is about 0.25mm, and a cupped hand has about 1/2 cup of volume, so two hands would be about 1 cup of volume.

A US cup is 236, 588 cubic mm. Divide that by our grain of sand which is 0.25mm which gives you 946, 352 grains. It was a pretty heaping handful though so maybe an extra 15% on top. That comes out to 1, 088, 305 grains of sand.

So Garret was a little over on his guess of 3mil lol.

Lets assume a handful is 100mL. (Probably a large hand if you ask me but it simplifies things). Theres our first conversion factor. Now we want to know how many sand grains are going to be in that 100mL, so we determine that one sand grain is about .00005 cm^3, or mL. So 1 sand grain is .00005 mL, our second conversion factor. Multiply out! You get about 2 Million, which as far as I’m concerned sound pretty accurate. In this case you had a bit more than just a single handful, so I’d say there’s between 3-4 million grains of sand🤙🏼
