The Golden Age of Hollywood is largely considered to refer to the time period between the early 1930s to the late 1950s
The Golden Age is also frequently referred to as "Classical Hollywood". The term "Golden Age" is used by some critics and historians to refer to a specific period of time — one that they believe represents high quality work produced by leading studios.
During this period, Hollywood produced films that were often quite different from those it had made even ten years earlier. Many important actors who had previously been known primarily for stage work were now making their debuts on screen. Some film genres also evolved during this time period, including Westerns and horror films, which would prove popular for decades afterward.
Many critics cite Citizen Kane, directed by Orson Welles, as one of the best movies ever made, and also one of the pinnacles of the Golden Age of Hollywood.
Other popular movies include The Wizard of Oz (1939) starring Judy Garland, Gone with the Wind (1939), starring Vivien Leigh and Clark Gable, and Casablanca (1942) starring Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman.
