How to Make Green Cleaning Supplies | Green Living

Hi, Alegre from Ember Living talking today about how to make your own green cleaning supplies. Now, a lot of us have gotten used to just buying a bottle. You know, we say, oh we need to clean the carpet, okay, this is a carpet cleaner. But we don't really understand what it is that we're buying. You don't necessarily need to have 30 different cleaning products under your kitchen sink.

You might be able to just have five if you understand what the different ingredients do and how to mix and match them. So if you think about it, you really need five basic types of cleaning products. You need something that cleans, which is usually say a soap or detergent. You need some sort of solvent. Solvents help to remove stains, so water is known as the universal solvent but maybe you want a plant-based solvent for harder to get out stains. You will want a whitener. Whiteners help to remove colors, either from the strawberry stains in your sink or the strawberry stains on your tablecloth, and that is essentially a type of bleach. I would use an oxygen bleach.

You need something that is abrasive. Abrasive helps to remove oils, built up oil and grime. Baking soda is a great abrasive. And then you also need some sort of disinfectant. Disinfectants kill germs, so this might be something you want to use in your toilet, if you really are concerned about that. And what you can use for a disinfectant are basically sort of acids or things like alcohol, or vinegar, or hydrogen peroxide. These things all kill different germs. And actually if you spray white vinegar and hydrogen peroxide onto a surface, you have to do it separately. You can't combine them.

You'll actually kill 99 percent of germs. You'll kill more germs than using chlorine bleach. So if you understand how these different ingredients work, you can figure out how to combine them based on what it is you need to clean, and then you just don't have to go out and buy a bottle because I need to clean X-Y-Z and this says it does it. You will understand what the ingredients do and how to combine them.
