New BMW X7: A Range Rover beater?

Meet the heavily revised BMW X7!

It may only be a mid-life facelift, but the X7 has undergone a couple of big changes to help differentiate it from its predecessor! But what exactly has changed?

Well for starters, there are a number of updates to the exterior. Around the back, there’s a new tail light design and a new bumper, and because we’ve got our hands on the X7 M60i edition, it also comes with quad tailpipes! There are a number of updates at the front, too, with a new headlight design and bumper. And like with any new BMW, it also comes equipped with a massive grille!

On the inside, the X7 is covered in high-quality materials. This updated edition also comes with a new infotainment display and system, the same as found in the latest iX. There’s also an updated centre console design, and the M60i has a couple of M design features, including an M steering wheel and M colours on the seatbelts.

When it comes to engines, the entry-level car comes with either a 3-litre straight-six turbo petrol or diesel, which can deliver 352hp or 381hp respectively. However, it’s possible to go much bigger, with the range-topper being a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 that puts down 530hp!

The entry-level X7 starts from around £85,000, but if you want to choose the V8-powered M60i, you’ll need to pay at least £115,000! But is it worth it? You’ll need to stick with Mat and see for yourself!

BMW X7, Mercedes GLS or Audi Q7... Which 7-seater is best?

This design works so much better on the X7 than the 7 series

The split head lights looks way better on the X7 than on the 7 series.

3.9 in the wet is madness, probably even too fast

3.9 sec with THAT wet road and THAT winter tyres ??? ... it could be an easy 3.5 in "perfect conditions"... stunning!

Great review as usual Matt!
This car is MASSIVE!
However, this new touch control trend is a real let down. You have to leave your eyes off the road for such a long time just to adjust the temperature of the car and all. Manufacturers must get rid of this and give us back physical button so we can adjust things on the fly, without even looking at the button (provided we remember the button layout though)

I have the 2019 X7 M50D. I’ve loved driving it for the past few years. I can’t imagine me changing cars ever!

As always an amazing presentation by Matt. However I can’t help but hate the new split headlight design. I don’t know why BMW did it to themselves😢

It was an amazing review, mat. It would be more helpful if you could tell the better alternative options of x7 in the final verdict as you said to shortlist it!

This design fits the x7 a lot more than the 7 series.

U can turn down the ambient lighting for night driving so it’s less reflective. It’s an actually setting in the infotainment system. It’s called night driving mode or something

I’ll definitely be taking the X7 over the Range, I think it sounds good to say you have a Range (Stat Quo) then to actually own one nowadays!

I bought X7M50D because of CarWow review it’s been 2.5years & 145, 000km. For me it’s the best driving experience and super comfort for long distance 🙏😁
Thank you so much

X7 is amazing, even the 40i version hustles, and with no 3rd row option on the new X5 builds it's the only 7 seater from BMW. The new iDrive layout is complicated because of a lack of buttons but the excellent voice recognition means you can just say "Hello BMW" to access most of the functionality.

I live near a well off area and I've seen soo many of these! It almost feels like BMW town, wasn't fan at all at 1st but love them now. Has so much road presence but seems a bit too big for tiny UK roads

I recently got an x5 and I realised how wide it is when trying to park in car parks in the UK. I have a feeling this would be even harder to park. I'd be leaving it on double yellows all the time lol

People say they don’t like this design, I really really like it. I hope they keep the old design for the 5 series and X5. But for the 7 series and x7 this makes much more sense.looks Way more up market as it should be and not just a bigger x5.

such a good review as always. i've driven bmw's for several decades now, and i'm sad to see them return to using iDrive for common settings (heat/ac, cruise distance, etc.). i test drove the new 760 and found the control experience to be similar to the early days of iDrive - where you needed to go hunting for the most basic controls. call me old (which i am!) but I love and will always want physical buttons for frequently accessed controls. when i launched the new climate menu, i found it very overwhelming. would i get used to it? of course. but one of the most important lessons i've learned in life is to keep the simple things simple!
