I've had bigger birds for decades. Blueberry reminds me how cute and strong-minded budgies are.

I'm considering adopting either pigeons or budgies soon (I've had budgies before - and I successfully taught them to step up! not bad for a 12-year-old). So, A) I'm loving all the recent budgie content and, B) I know you all don't specialize in pigeons and doves, but if you ever did one or two of these short 2-3 min videos about how to target train pigeons or doves, I would be so happy. I imagine the foundational principles are the same, but there may be some differences, and it would help knowing a bit from the experts before I go in. And if you didn't, well, I'm here for all the bird content regardless, haha. I love all the feathered things.

I also had the pleasure this week of visiting Ronie's For the Love of Birds! Dominic was super generous with his time and we had a great visit (and we talked about the great work BirdTricks is doing, of course). I picked up a few of your pins, too. Thanks for all your work!

It’s also interesting that a bird might be more likely to fly or hop to you rather than stepping up to a hand close to it. That makes sense since getting too close might be perceived as a threat.

I don’t have a budgie but my cockatiel learned so many tricks and is really treat motivated but since I got him as an adult and I don’t know much about his background I don’t think he was socialized well with humans. He won’t let me touch him and is very reluctant to step up to my hand. He will step up to a hand held perch though. He has learned to trust me a bit since I got him and now allows me to kiss him on the beak and he will step on my finger with one foot. I just can’t seem to get him to trust me enough to allow touching or a full step up but maybe someday... I’m amazed at the progress we’ve made because this was a bird that would not even allow a human hand or face near him at first. He still doesn’t trust anyone else but me and he doesn’t trust me 100% but at least I’ve gained some trust in the last year and a half since I got him. My other cockatiel was a hand fed baby and she stepped up pretty much since day one so I think a bird’s background makes a big difference.

What treat are you using to train her to step up 😊

What can you use as a jackpot reward for a budgie?

For small birds, is there something in their physiology or the physics of flight that just makes it that much easier/instinctive for them to fly as opposed to step up "one foot at a time?" As an example for humans for instance, I think it's much easier/instinctive for us to climb stairs one foot at a time rather than hopping up each one.

I have six budgies, they are not really tame but respond well to training. As I (for the moment) can’t separate them do you have any tips for training a flock?

What about how to get a bird to go from clicker training in the cage, to clicker training outside the cage, especially when she won't "station" outside the cage, please?

I noticed you didn't use a clicker with Blueberry?

Oh I soo need your help I got a 8 week old budgie 2 and a half weeks ago I bought him as hand tame he will step up in the cage but won't let me take him out of the cage on my hand however he will come out and fly about a few times on his own he will let me tickle his head when he feels like it sometimes he is not so keen and backs off he will also eat from my hand occasionally but I am hoping to get the kind of bond where he will come out of his cage and interact with me I know he is very young and its early days and I think I probably made a few mistakes with him when I first got him but I am trying my best the breeder basically showed me me kinda grab him and take him out which I now know is wring I don't do that no more im trying to let him decide but any advice from anyone is much appreciated xx
