From 1975 - 1978: Khmer Rouge invaded Vietnam a lot of times, that made ~40.000 Vietnam civilians died. They even captured some Vietnam's islands in 1975, hold for some days before Vietnam recaptured. Pol Pot's goal is trying to annex Southern Vietnam and this goal is also a card for him to gain more power in the party and purge all people who did not agree with him in the party.
After trying to make deal and talk with Khmer Rouge but not replied. Vietnam decided to wipe out Khmer Rouge once and for all. If not that USA, China, and ASEAN supported Pol Pot and gave him bases in Thailand, the war would only happen in year 1979.
