Look at his face, that is the closest he has ever come to feeling empathy for a potential victim.

He knew how hard it was to find a good secretary in New York at that time.

This was an actual problem during the 80s.

She is objectively the nicest person in Patrick Bateman’s life.

She's the only one characterwho listens to Patrick when he speaks

I’d say the phone call ultimately saved her, bc hearing Evelyn just made him realize Jeane wasn’t one of the soulless/shallow people he was used to in his world.

It's the empath meets the psychopath.

She was the one person who saw him as an individual. The constant theme of the movie is people mixing up Patrick for different people, leading to this lack of identity. She sees him and cares for him personally. Patrick may be a horrible and irredeemable person, but his character can say many things about the world.

The fact that she thought he was saying “I might emotionally hurt you” rather than “physically hurt you” is astonishing.

I think his facial expression and eyes when he's pointing the nailgun at her say a lot. He looks more unsure of himself and conflicted compared to his previous kills. He genuinely thinks about the possibility of not killing her, which I don't think he did at all for the previous people he killed.

That message saved her life…He saw the juxtaposition between someone who doesn’t listen to him and someone who actually listened, and that was enough for Patrick to feel pity and mercy. Jean made him human in that moment, and he wanted to “fit in” with normal people who don’t commit heinous crimes or to (not do anything bad). Or…maybe he just didn’t want to go through the trouble of interviewing and hiring a new Secretary with all the video tapes he had to return???

He's a narcissist, but she triggers something in him. In a way, she's a gateway to potential, and he sees that she's not just another shallow person in this conformity society, but an actual person who stands out and is 'real'. He GENUINELY feels she has a reason to live.

She is incredible in this scene. Just the picture of innocence and vulnerability.

She wasn't fake and actually listened to him, unlike everyone else in his life who just pretended to be his friend.

It wasn’t just the phone call that saved her life. It was the person leaving the message that saved her life. He saw, felt, and heard the difference between each woman. If he heard there were no difference then he would have smoked her right there.

He saw her as not a bimbo basically, someone who actually is caring and loving and not just looking for sex and money, hence why when he heard the message he had a change of heart because he realized she’s different.

It's definitely not love. I think Patrick finally found the one person who cares about him. Like really cares about him and it feeds his narcissism. And that's more important than quenching his lust for murder.

I think she's the only character that acknowledged the little bit of humanity he had left that's why he spared her, because she saw him with caring and loving eyes.

She was never in any danger. That nail gun requires a compressed air hose to be connected to it in order to work. Without the compressed air hose, the nail gun wouldn't have done anything if Patrick had pulled the trigger.
