What if “Paul Allen” wasn’t Paul Allen, and Patrick killed a man he didn’t even know?

His American Accent is literally perfect

All possible outcomes:
1) He killed someone else thinking he was Paul
2) He killed Paul but lawyer is one of the other delusional buisnessman who don't remember other people name himself.
3) He killed the guy he wanted to kill but his real name was not Paul and Patrick just imagined that his name was Paul because he was too indulged in his own fantasy.
4) He didn't killed him and only fantasized about it to the point he couldn't tell right from wrong.
5) He killed him but the prescription of time in Patrick's head is messed up, perhaps he killed him 1 day ago when Paul JUST landed back to country but he thinks he killed him many days ago.
6) Lawyer knows Paul is dead and Patrick is mentally unstable so he decided to cover up Paul death and decided to tell lies to Patrick so he zips his mouth and doesn't think too much about it(unlikely).

You can make more assumption of Paul death tbh

The extreme subtle facial expression when his face completely changes upon a realization. Such superb acting

In my pov, I feel like Patrick didn’t kill anybody. It was all just going on his mind and that’s why, when his assistant opened the book in his drawer she saw all the drawings. which was going through his mind and in conclusion he never killed nobody and it was all thoughts or dream.

This film is insane because you can’t even tell if that guy Patrick is speaking to EVEN IS his lawyer, we hear him say he had dinner with Paul Allen two days ago, but how can we know he’s even talking about the same person? Like how can his word hold weight when he openly mistakes people’s identities, like he’s currently doing with Bateman, it’s such a mindfuck i can’t explain

It was not a dream. That’s why this film is so scary. It’s subtle enough to make you question what you just watched.

The fact that there is no editing or music makes this scene that much more impactful.

Theory: The lawyer knows it was Bateman all along. It actually makes sense if he is just acting like he didn’t do it in this scene, and signalling Bateman to shut up, as he will blow his cover. Then Patrick realises that the lawyer was covering for him.

Got to remember that the guy that is supposed to be Paul Allen didn't even know Patrick Bateman was Patrick Bateman. It would make sense that Patrick confused Paul with someone else.

Patrick’s realization here is not that he was hallucinating this whole time but that the system itself does not care and that he very likely could be one of many psychopathic serial killers in this world of rich elites putting profit and competition above humanity. Explains more as to why throughout the movie he could say his darkest thoughts out loud thinking the other person did not hear, when really no one actually cares to hear. Or how Willem Dafoe’s detective was unbelievably unsuccessful at his job. The movie is called AMERICAN psycho for a reason as the whole thing is a commentary on what kind of person a purely capitalistic system that promotes greed and its cruelty can create. I think on some level with Patrick’s actions he is looking for and expecting accountability just around the corner but in the end he realizes it will never come as he is just one of many and part of the evil design.

The great thing about this movie is that everyone was getting everyone’s name wrong all the time. So the director leaves it possible that he really did kill Paul Allen, and that lawyer had dinner with someone who he only thought was Allen. But maybe he really did have dinner with Paul Allen and Bateman is completely nuts and all the murders were in his head.

This fits nicely with the realtor scene earlier in the movie, she also didn't acknowledge that there were bodies in the apartment and told Patrick to not make a scandal, meanwhile here we have the Lawyer who says that Paul Allen isn't dead even though we see the entire movie that he is. My theory is that both the woman and the lawyer are psychos (just like half of the people in the movie) like Patrick and didn't want Paul's murder to blemish their career, so the realtor acts like there weren't any corpses to not let the apartment's price fall and the lawyer lies that Paul Allen is alive and doesn't acknowledge Patrick's confession so he isn't seen as the lawyer to a psychotic killer like Bateman.

In the end it's all to keep the facade, just like how Bateman keeps his.

The author of the novel (Bret Ellis) stated that it all did in fact happen…in real life.
