Welcome back to part 2 of my PS2 series where I am going to show you how to backup your games. As you are all probably aware I believe in legal emulation which means you dump your own games to use for emulation purposes. backing up your PS2 games is also great for preservation as all disk based consoles and games will eventually die no matter how well cared for. If you have a modded PS2 or use PCSX2 to emulate games this reduces the wear on your physical disks and laser to keep both running longer.

This has been one of the most information and easy to follow "how to" when it comes to backing up and getting ones physical media preserved as well as played via emulation. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! * SUBSCRIBES SO HARD *

thanks man! i was thinking about backing up my PS2 collection and i wouldn't have guessed it was this easy. i love the PS2 and it's games but like you said, i'd prefer to play them this way as it doesn't put wear and tear on my PS2 or the games.

It's also important to remind people that with free ROMs and ISOs, it is VERY easy to get viruses & adware/malware from them, so it's definitely at your OWN RISK!

I just emulated my first PS2 game on the Steam Deck (The Legend of Spyro a New Beginning)! Thank you so much for your helpful and insightful tutorials:D One question. After I create an image file out of my PS2 disc, would it still work on the PlayStation 2 like normal? I've seen some people say that by default, you cannot play burned PS2 discs. Maybe because it removes the copyright protection on the disc or something like that? I don't know. But when I put in my Spyro disc after creating an image file from it (as done in this tutorial), it works perfectly fine, just like normal. The only difference that I saw is the screen go all green for a split second or so while it was starting up. I'm not sure if that is normal or if that is because I burned the disc or for a different reason, like having a 128 MB memory card plugged in. I guess my question is does creating an image file change the disc in anyway, even if it is on a technical level? Or does it not, as if you never created an image file from the disc in the first place?
In layman's terms, should I buy duplicates of PS2 games that I already have? Or should I use PS2 games from my childhood that I already have?

Tried to copy the disc straight to a USB just using my computer and was confused as to why it wouldn't work, very helpful

Thanks I just got a steamdeck and saw a sale of 3 ps2 games on ebay that got delivered, so now I can dump one of my favorite series to use on it and keep them until I die like a true gamer.

Don't take pleasure in being that person but wouldn't modifying your hardware and dumping your bios files breach the terms of service and therefore be illegal? I'm just saying cos you seem so adament in sticking to the legalities of it all

I completely understand your stance on piracy and you not wanting to include links to ROMs and ISOs, because yes it is illegal to download them off the internet

However, these games are not widely available for sale outside of the secondhand market, plus, Sony isn’t going to profit from those games, they’re no longer manufactured and are very old

Also, some people can be very greedy and charge astronomical prices for some PS2 games, which can lead to some not being able to backup some games due to not having money

Even then, if you do have a PC, a PS2 console, and a PS2 game lying around, just save yourself the headache and back it up to your PC, it’s completely legal and you don’t run the risk of signing a death warrant for your PC, but it is a bit understandable to download the ROM for a game that is no longer sold and is way too expensive on the secondhand market

I respect your opinion and your decision to not distribute ROMs and ISOs(hell I wouldn’t do it either), but I do understand the other side a little bit

What are the risks of burning games with a crappy external disc drive? I have a HP external that has a slowest burn speed of x10 - will this result in having shoddy/glitchy/incomplete copies of my ps2 games?

Does IMGBurn automatically name the PS2 ISO or do you have to name it yourself? Because when I inserted a disc it says Image.

So what are your thoughts on owning the games physically, ripping them, then getting rid of them? They weren’t technically acquired illegally, and this whole notion that so many people put out there about backing up your games to preserve your physical copy to rot on the shelf is really just a garbage concept and borderline hoarding if you really think about it…

I’m cool with going through the extra work to digitize my collection rather than steal it from the internet, but once it’s digitized, the likelihood of ever using the physical copy again is slim to none, so it doesn’t need to take space on my shelf for no reason.
