If you do this it wont end up like here, first a year old tree wont look like this, second when you top it new branches will appear but will shoot straight up, not at ideal 45degrees or around .
Nor will you get 1 branch replacing the one you cut, it will be 3-4 .
Due to this, you will end up messing you tree up .Just like i did by fallowing these examples .
Do not top your tree, I did it and i got instead of one leader Trunk, i got 3-4 leaders all growing from same spot , this is bad, looks like a bush more then a tree .And leads to weakness for the trunk will eventually split .
Sure i can cut huge branches off now, but that will hurt the tree and it wont bud .
Do not top you tree let it develop naturally, and you help it to grow how you like it by inducing branch growth with a careful cut of the bark, just above node 1/3 in to the branch .
This will stop the fluids going and you will get a branch where you want it .
And lead other branches so that you make small cuts on the outside bud, and removing buds right udner it, for the first 2-3 buds below the cut will grow str8 up, this is bad .
Remove them while they are buds, rather then twigs or branches .

I just learned that a sweet cherry tree and a sour cherry tree need different kind of pruning. Where with sweet cherry you want to go for a shape with a 'central leader', and the sour cherry you want an 'open center'.

Stop topping trees.

This advice is archaic and redundant.
