The Russian Lady was the best Hands Down!

Well I thought:

#1. James - Subtle, faultlessly beautiful lighting and the only painting that recognisably shows the main structure.
#2. Jana - Very joyful lighting with excellent volume to the water and bushes.
#3. Louise - A beautiful, calming pallete, yet full of energy and a beautiful simplicity, yet full of interest.
#4. Craig - A vivid bacchanalian take on the scene, might be a great deal better if the loggia were rendered more strongly.
#5. Ridell - A spartan exhibit of the buildings, which look like they belong to a cool morning in North Africa, but plonked into a very muddy English scene, with slightly awry perspective. The amber part of the water is quite lovely though.
#6. Deepa - The tree in the middle ground has good depth, but much of the painting seems very fussy, without really delivering a feeling for the subject. It looks like a cottage with a garden and socks on the line.
#7. Evelyn - I'm sure it has a following, but I'm just not a fan of the black scribbles or loose watercoloury style, though the furthest away parts are nicer.
#8. Joe - I honestly don't mind the look, but it does look like an average 5 minute sketch in photoshop, so I have to give it #8 for effort. It was the first one finished though!

Are the "painting pods" availble for sale anywhere by chance ?
They seem to be a wonderful design.

Any information would be appreciated.

How on earth did the Russian lady not make the shortlist? All 8 were admirable but she's way off the top of the scale!

Well this is so different from the portrait artist series that Sky Arts do. There so many of the artists take a photo and work from it but here a lot of the artists are chagoing their artwork according to the weather. No one has taken a photo

I wonder at the criteria used by the judges. I have my own opinion, that it has very little to do with artistic merit. This show is dependent upon advertising and appealing to an international audience. Small wonder that the winners chosen are often met with incredulity.

Unstinted admiration and respect for all participants and their abilities . . . .but . . . . . not one of these paintings would attract a second glance from me. Wish them all well nevertheless

This is the second episode im trying to watch, and i dont think this series is any good. On both episodes, i found myself constantly skipping ahead. They were just too boring and pretentious. I have seen *much* better videos about landscape painting (and also about plein air painting and urban sketching). I admit I haven't seen any other videos, of landscape artists competing against each other. But i did see reality TV show, about comic strip artists competing against each other, and it was leagues more interesting than this (The show was called "Strip Search" and it was produced by the guys behind the Penny Arcade webcomic)

Nothing especially great this episode - a lot of it was the same 'muddy blocks'. The tryptic really looked like a base point and not a finished work, especially next to his submission which is lovely. The wildcard artist was better than all of them!

I picked the best one right from the beginning. :-)

What's wrong with painting what you see there. Why does it have to be "different"? Are the judges so jaded and bored that they can't stand to see beautiful artwork? No, it doesn't have to be hyper realistic, but I would prefer it not look like something just thrown together.

I could not make heads or tails of the tryptic. I would have chosen the Russian lady as a third contender.

This one irritates me so much. The man's paintings make no sense. If you don't want the paintings to look like where they are, why do you have them go there to paint. Crazy

My top 3: Evelyn, Louise and Yana, with Yana as my winner. Really mystified at the judges selection here.

I couldn't have chosen between Deepa and Ridell, both did amazing works. All of the artists, even those who weren't short listed did really high quality works. It must have been hard for the judges to select the short list.

I'm delighted Landscape Artist of the Year is on YouTube. I first found it on the PBS UK channel (Washington DC) and became immersed in the show so much I watched the reruns time and again. Then Covid interrupted my journey but fortunately my art school started having Zoom classes. Cudos to the School, staff and faculty who learned what they had to do bring our classes into our homes. Not everyone could do this. Back to watching Landscape Artist of the Year - I am a watercolorist, who grew up in a family who spent many hours (weekends etc. in the many art galleries in Washington DC.) I keep growing and expanding my love, interest and developing my skills because of the many styles of art that all our Pod Artists and 50 wildcard artists share with us by participating in the competitions. Many thanks for YouTubing!

I normally agree with the judges, but their top 3 were not in my top 3 this time around.
