Pause before ad. I think I now how the trick works
It's a two way out. Either they match, or brian put it in a position so in every vertical line there are no equals. Both are a convincing finish. and since he doesn't say what he's doing beforehand he can change the meaning of his setup without you knowing.

Do you think Brian and the people he does the tricks with, actually give "Thanks to the sponsors" while the pause for a moment to insert the ad? He says "we" have to give thanks to our sponsors, unless he is one of those people that refer to himself as "we". LOL.
