If someone told him a hallucinogen had been painted on the inside of his mouth and he could not eat or drink, then they lied to him. Probably for the purpose of keeping him quiet and making him despair so much that he would consider ending his own life. The mouth would slowly absorb whatever organic was put in it and hallucinations are organic.
