Lyrics:
She's off the hook they took her rook
Her queen is pinned her pawns are stuck
Easier to play
There are fewer moves to make
No more pieces left to take
Just shake hands and walk away
But she don't have the choice to quit
And she don't have that final say
To let go of everything
Push off her raft and let her bones sink
It'd be better if she didn't have to think

She is hurting and waiting
And choking and waiting
And panicking and waiting
And stretching and waiting

The nurses talk her ears off and treat her like a baby
When they wipe her
When they wash her
Is she just another lady
Skin and bones in her eighties

She's lost the tongue to speak and she's waiting
She's lost the right to scream and she's waiting
Forgotten all her dreams and she's waiting
She's shrinking toward the emptiness we run from all our lives
The black and white we see
When we're waiting

That's not right
That's not right
She's still got love in her life
When she looks in my eyes
I know she's glad to be alive

Memory is all we've got
and she can't remember if I visit or not
And who can hear her
Her voice is shot
I move in close but can't read her thoughts

Where will I wanna be when I'm waiting
Who will I wanna see when I'm waiting
What will love even mean when I'm waiting
What will be left of me when I'm waiting?

I don't wanna spend my days disintegrating
Stuff juice in my mouth when I don't feel like eating
Mind full of ideas I'm not articulating
Being here is degrading and I'm debating the meaning of life
when you can't wait for death and you spend your days waiting

That's not right
That's not right
She's still got love in her life
When she looks in my eyes
I know she's glad to be alive
Hours days and years pass by
It never feels like enough time
Though she's ill and asks to die
Each time I leave I can't say goodbye

Waiting.

I have not listened to your entire discography but I have been diving into your music as of recent. I want to say that I am sorry for the loss of your grandmother. You mention her a lot, and the pain of loss is sometimes, most of the time when we think about it - unbearable. Keep creating beautiful touching human music. The values you share and love you give through the composition and lyrical content in your music is not only inspiring, it is what the world needs right now. Hope you see this and it makes you smile, as your music has made me cry, smile, and laugh. My wife and I listen to your shorts when we’re sad, and your songs from the wave that got away if we need to process our emotions. The first time we watched the video of the wave that got away we cried through the entire thing. It touched us. Thank you again, Ben! Very happy to have discovered you and your music. Keep being you.

Having spent the past few years living with my 87 year old grandmother, I've really gained a new understanding of what very old age is really like. The notion of spending every day wondering whether you'll have another stroke and die... it's final, inescapable, and coming for us all (and that's if we're lucky). It's very easy to take the elderly for granted and ignore them, which is a damn shame because they have so much wisdom and experience we should be learning from. Even doing simple things like visiting with residents in assisted living and hospice centers can brighten their world and ours immensely. This track and "I'm Still Here" are beautiful and I cherish them, so I can only imagine how important to me they will become when my grandma finally passes--permanent and personal reminders of the ones who came before. Ben, your music is beyond compare and I cannot thank you enough for doing what you do.

p.s. y'all should watch Derek starring Ricky Gervais if'n y'all wanna cry some mo'

Echoing others, but the live versions, of this session especially, are seriously next level. I'd be super keen to buy a release of this session.

Listening to this while I upload a video to my channel. I'm so glad my internet connection is slow and has me... ... ... waiting.

Gonna have to listen to MORE before I go back to work... or maybe while I work? Wait, no... I can't listen to this and work at the same time. These cuts are too dope, Ben!
