I got rejected 4 weeks after my entrance exam. If they used IQ tests they would’ve rejected me after 4 days so I am grateful for Oxford’s decision.

Hi Matt, I managed to secure an offer for Law! As an international applicant, I really found your videos immensely helpful and insightful. I would love to have the opportunity to meet you in person this fall to convey my gratitude :)

I really needed this video. I've just received an offer to study English at Oxford and was feeling some major imposter syndrome. I've never done an IQ test and likely never will, but as a black person I have been told in life that on average I can expect to have a lower IQ than the rest of the human species. Whilst I discounted these so-called 'scientific studies', I guess a part of me had internalised them, and this video has taken a weight off my chest that I didn't even realise was there!

My problem with IQ tests is that it’s basically the same question over and over again… it’s simply pattern recognition. It truly is too narrow.

Imagine thinking patterns or a few questions could determine the intelligence of anyone, that's unreliable.

Thank you for putting this so eloquently. For years I've failed to explain my belief to others that 'IQ' really has no value and isn't a measure of anything in particular. I always would get a strange look from people or they'd argue. IQ is useful for detecting learning disabilities. In normal people it really isn't useful for anything.

So many people believe in this myth that others are mentally superior to others and this can be demonstrated through IQ. This is probably one of the most horrible widespread beliefs in society. IQ has been used to justify horrible atrocities. Its only value is in putting people down.

If you are born healthy and in a stable environment, for the most part you are on an even playing field with those around you.

Me, IQ 146, I never saw or see myself as superior to anyone else. Thank God. I think ego is a big part as well; those with very high IQ might think they have founded the wheel, but its the opposite. It's about how creative someone is, in acts and/or imaginal thinking. All my friends have ''IQ'' of the average, or below average. They are very smart people, lovely, kind, caring and most of them even very creative in arts, instruments etc. :) God created all of us equally. Yes, someone might be better in calculation/math and someone else might be 1000 times better in making portraits, animals, scenery. Thanks sir, your video is very very brightful and a good lesson for all of us. I bookmarked this video ;) Btw, I only see myself as ''genius'' in the sense of making art since I have been a child, but not of the ''magical IQ test'' I took (out of fun lol)

Hi Dr Williams! I've been watching your videos for at least 3 years now and I'm really glad to tell you I got an offer for French at Christ Church!!!!🌈🌈🌈🍾🍾🍾🎉 Thank you so much for your videos, they really helped me (I'm afraid I wouldn't have stood a chance otherwise, as I live in a small village in the Pyrenees hahaha, I'm in the newspaper and everything). I really hope I bump into you around Oxford so I can thank you in person!

40 years ago I did the Mensa test when considering a career in IT. I received the gushing letter congratulating me on my IQ score of 146, along with an invitation to do the full test. Fortunately I was intelligent enough to know that the £35 they were asking me to pay was a con. I've done fine in life with just 3 'O' Levels. I put the £35 towards a programming course.

The world needs to see this video. I used to think I was almost alone in believing the same thing. My take on IQ is that it is a control mechanism for society, not a measure of intelligence. There is no concrete definition of intelligence, so how can we precisely measure something we can't define properly? Accuracy and precision are not the same when it comes to science. There are many different types of intelligence. I also think that people can improve their performance in anything, like how I went from doing bad in school to getting mostly A's, all because I needed to learn some life lessons, and realize my potential. As a Psychology student I want to share a very important message BECOME the best version of yourself and never settle for less. The BEST test of intelligence that we have is the game of life. The power is yours to decide your fate, and time is precious.

Matt, Spot on: I couldn’t agree more with what you said (apart from disinterest is not the same as not being interested!).

IQ scores are not related to "natural selection", because people are able to adapt to the environment. Survival is the winner. However, during this pandemic hope university not choose candidate students with a certain type of HLA genes.

IQ tests are similar in scope to the countless brain training games out there.

Hi Matt,
This is a very encouraging video. lol.
Even for a middle aged man like me.
You are a smart and good man, and
Oxford is very lucky to have you working
with them. A man like you belongs there.
All best to you, Matt,
Jeff
