Gosh that Rhino was so scary to me as a kid when I watched this film. Just it's glowing eyes and mean looking face alone were terrifying to look at.

I saw this in theatre screening with my school when I was about 12. Looked amazing then. I'm even more impressed now.

I always thought it look different but I thought it was just really good stop motion with a combination of cgi, that’s incredible

Ask anyone who watched this movie as a child what the scariest part of the film was.

Odds are good they'll respond that it was *the rhino itself...*

The book at least explained the rhino as one that had escaped from the London Zoo, but in the film adaptation...

It's portrayed as some sort of ghastly, nightmarish eldritch abomination that tragically killed James's parents and remains his greatest fear.

And this actually ends up being one of the reasons why it's so scary...

The rhino's origin is unknown to the point that it could be *anything* your twisted mind can make up...
(You don't even have to interpret it as a monster for it to be scary. It may very well have been a storm with winds strong enough to swallow two adults and orphan their child)

I remember hearing about this on Movie Magic or some other show around the time this movie came out. But it never gets old seeing how it was done.

Lazy CGI would do this but it will never get the charm and emotional effect that a stop-motion can do.

That’s so cool to finally learn how they did that! 😊

I would have never guessed, but I already knew. I saw a bts years ago where they explained that special effect already. Still learned a few things from this vid, so neat all around. I assume that the lightning coming off the horn was VFX, not SFX though. but it's pretty neat that everything else was practical.

Fun fact, the inventor of this style of underwater paint used to simulate smoke/clouds was one of the creators of Godzilla(Eiji Tsuburaya)
