What Types of Vegetables Should You Grow?

Since this video was only 60 seconds long, I didn't talk about the possibility of growing heading broccoli in multiple successions. This is another option to spread out your broccoli harvest. The downside of this approach is that takes a lot more coordination and planning and uses your growing space and labour less efficiently compared to growing a bed of heads all at the same time. Heading broccoli is a very low maintenance crop that you can walk away from as long as you return to harvest at the right time. If you always have multiple successions of heading broccoli that you need to seed, transplant, and harvest, you've just turned a very low maintenance crop into a very high maintenance crop.

Some of you will also wonder why I didn't mention that heading broccoli can re-sprout for additional harvests. We've done this before with several varieties and had mixed results. The secondary shoots were of lesser quality and the volume and timing of harvest was less predictable than the initial heads. That's why we keep coming back to sprouting broccoli when we want that steady ongoing harvest.

If you have any favourite broccoli varieties to recommend, please share them in the comments. In this video, you saw two of our favourites, Gypsy heading broccoli and Happy Rich sprouting broccoli.

You'll also notice that he's used netting to protect it. Without that and other protective measures, you're just growing bug food.

Btw, the quiz is short and gives legit advice at the end without making you subscribe/give your email 👌

I grow a heading brocolli that later sends out lots of side shoots. One big harvest to freeze, then lots of stirrfry for the rest of the season :)

Use snips to remove them and they do better because that snapped edge is way more susceptible to rot

When I started my garden a decade ago... I wanted to grow what I bought at the store.
I know that there are a few things I will never be able to grow (pineapple and bananas). But I can grow pretty much everything else... I just need to find the perfect variety for my small patch of real estate ( 0.13 acres).
The only veggie I haven't started yet is asparagus.

Interesting. All the broccoli we've ever grown we harvest the heads and then get shoots after. I thought that all broccoli did that. We tend to avoid single harvest produce as the garden space is used better by multiple harvest produce.
