Originally by Sia, this swooping serenade is about a party girl's life. What better person to cover this song than the giant, deep yet soothingly supple voice that is Puddles Pity Party. He won me over the first time I listened to a cover by him, and since then I've been wanting to cover more of his work. Well, he's back!

Oh hello! Thank you, my friend! Maybe we could sing together some day?

I think you nailed it with the genius of the clown persona. Once he's become a clown he can then fully become the music without it coming across as overly dramatic, he's two steps removed from just a person at that point. He is the song.

"What do you want to do when you grow up?"
"I will develop my singing technique so that I sound like butter, then I will dress up as a clown and call myself Puddles and sing pop songs with such heart and feeling and expression that people cry."
This man is a genius.

The way he plays with the buttons of the coat while he is troubled... so delicate!

My wife and I seen Puddles a few years ago, Great live performer. He goes out into the crowed before the show and literately shakes everyone's hand, the was a 3 tear Auditorium with 1000's of people. Great man, Great show.

This man was made to sing Bowie songs. Life on Mars is especially stunning.

I was front row in Charleston, SC a few years back. He picked me to help him off the stage then proceeded to take my phone and filmed himself singing "Unchained Melody" before giving my phone to someone else and taking their phone. By the end of the song about a dozen of us met at the stage to get our phones back and have pictures taken with Puddles. It was the most fun show I've ever been to!

Such a powerful performer. He just leaves all that intensity ringing in the air. There's no release. I love him.

Sia has personal experience with "hanging on for dear life" she has spoken of fighting with addiction, suicidal thoughts, and PTSD from abuse in her childhood. IMO, Puddles did a wonderful job of honoring the emotions behind a song like this.

the eye contact makes him so much more poignant - he is singing directly to you. I enjoyed seeing him live a couple of years ago in San Antonio and I know he will be here again this fall and I am hoping to be able to see him again.

Puddles delivery of this song captures what desperation feels like when it is inside me! Thanks for explaining how the use of voice evokes the feeling!

Love me some Puddles! His covers of “Royals” and “Hallelujah” are top notch!

This has been one of my most anticipated analysis videos since Elizabeth was first introduced to Puddles. Puddles' emotional expression in this makes me cry every time.

Your analysis of Puddles technique helps me better grasp what the artist is doing with this song to make it his. I've long wondered why this talented man would choose a clown persona to make his art through. When you explain how we can accept the artistic flair and movements through a clown character and can not accept the same through a mere man, this I understood. His persona adds an element of theater that a middle aged man in a suit lacks, and this makes perfect sense.

That moment at the very end when you're left with your jaw hanging open and whisper "ohhhh.... is that the end?" is everything! That's how Puddles gets you...

Puddles is my new favorite obsession. The contrast of his amazing talent dressed up in a classic costume is pure genius. The other half of his talent is in the arrangements so emotional, you need hear puddles sing Major Tom. Spot on .
P.S. love your reviews and analysis. You can put words to my thoughts.

Again, another incredible arrangement from Scott Bradlee. The way he is able to find the perfect tune, rhythm, instrumentalists, phrasing, tempo (u really just name it!) for so many vastly different artists amazes me time and time again. He definitively should get so much more recognition for his body of work

One things about Clowns is that they are the heart of the circus. They might not talk, but their body expressions are there to elicit emotions. See Chaplin for example, ranging from The Boy to Great Dictator. They are able to show the true emotion that most performers can't.

Puddles is brilliant, the sadness, the desperation on this song. It hits home

The almost orgasmic intensity of your reactions to the singers, forces me to listen deeper, trying find what I’m not hearing.
