You know how there is a myth that great wall of china is visible from space?

Olympus Mons is a body that actually fulfils that.

And it's so massive, if you were hiking up it, you wouldn't even know you were walking up hill.

Fact: Olympus Mons is actually the Solar System's largest volcano.

Another fun fact: despite being the highest elevation from sea level, Mt Everest is not the peak that extends furthest into space. It’s acrually Chimborazo in Ecuador since it’s closer to the equator. The earth is not a 100% round sphere, the equator bulges out due to the earths rotation and the sea level is also much higher near the equator than the poles as well.

Interesting fact, Olympus Mons and Mauna kea are the same type of volcanos.

Well, this is down to definitions once again. On Mars a zero level was defined and the height of mountains is measured against it. On earth this is sea level. Technically you could define Everest as starting from the bottom of the ocean too. Or define Mars' zero level as higher.

And know that Mars is half the size of the Earth making all this even more amazing

- Yeah, well Mars gravity is only ⅓ of earths so it's mountain should be 3 times higher.

Imagine mountain climbers seeing that and realizing if they reach the top they’ll just go straight to space. It’s like death crawl basically, or a once in a lifetime achievement. Honestly would be a great tv show, one you’d never want to be a part of but would always like to see

Earth: at least Im bigger than you😂

No, the ozone layer is way above 20 km, the layer is in the stratosphere, wich starts at 20 km and ands at 50, and ozone can be find mostly in the upper regions, so you can place 2 olympos mons on top of each other and then its correct.

Olympus Mons is actually a giant shield volcano. On Earth, similar volcanoes like Mauna Kea slowly move along with the Earth's crust due to plate tectonics, resulting in a chain of volcanoes as the crust moves over the underlying magma hotspot fuelling them. This process creates structures like the Hawaiian Islands.

The Martian crust, on the other hand, never developed plate tectonics. As a result, the volcanoes of Mars remained fixed over the magma hotspot creating them and continued to grow indefinitely. This growth was also helped by Mars' weaker gravity and thinner atmosphere, slowing erosion. Even so, the flanks of the mountains have worn away over the hundreds of millions of years that they have stood, leaving a spectacular ridge that would probably be very beautiful from the surface.

Some people think the Martian volcanoes may have been active relatively recently, however. I guess there's some evidence that Olympus Mons may have erupted as recently as the Miocene. Mars' mantle may still be molten, and the planet might not be quite as geologically dead as we have suspected.

I'm most certain that a Mountain Hiker would try to climb to the tippy top & get stuck. Expecting to be rescued. 🙄🙆🏻‍♂️🤦‍♂️

The fact that no matter how much trenches and mountain exist on a planet, it's surface still crazy smooth if we shrink their size to a cue ball.. just smooth as cue ball.

It's not a mountain, it's a volcano.. This is why Education is so important

Would be cool if we had one here. We could literally walk to space, that's a hell of a hike

Gonna be some crazy snowboarding once we inhabit mars Just need a lil snow 😅

That crater on top might suggest that Olympus mons is a volcano which might be why mars has no life, considering that there are ancient canyons and river beds from liquid water, it might be like a big martian Yellowstone that actually happened
